Pilot Candidate: Teenage Mech Pilots in a Broken Solar System

A solar-system-level disaster wipes out four planetary systems, humanity clings to life in space colonies, and Zion stands as the last planet that can still sustain people. Then come the “Victims” and the only real answer is a handful of towering mechanized weapons called Ingrids, built with eerie female humanoid forms and powered through nerve-link technology that can wreck the human body.

The Cataclysm And Zion’s Stakes

So, the candidate for Goddess series takes place in the millennium week after Star Year 4084, when a cataclysm has been called the Crisis of Systems, resulted in the annihilation of four planetary systems. With Zion being the one planet left with the ability to sustain human life, humanity must cling to life in space colonies. Now, in the start year of 5030, Zion is under constant threat of invasion by extraterrestrial life forms dubbed victims.

Ingrids And The Academy Requirements

And in order to combat their alien foes, humans have developed a quintet of giant mechanized weapons called Ingrids or goddesses due to their female humanoid resemblance. A school called the Goddess Operation Academy or GOA or GOA for short is established to train the specific few that will have the capacity and capability of piloting the ingredients. They are typically young men and must meet several requirements. They must be in good health, must be 14 to 16 years old, must have an EL blood type, and must possess the potential for EX, uh, which is a superhuman abilities which secondarily link to the pilot's nerves to the Ingress interface. As EX puts uh such a physical and mental strain on the pilot, replacements must be turned out by the GOA within a reasonable time, uh amount of time, excuse me. Zero’s Arrival And First Link

The plot of the candidate for God is primarily focused on zero inna or in uh they pronounced it kind of differently, but I'm just gonna say um zero inna. He's a brass trainee who's recently left uh calling the home wife with his mother in order to pursue his dream of becoming an Ingrid pilot. Shortly after arriving, he becomes lost and is subconsciously called to the hangar by a mysterious voice, suddenly finding himself within a cockpit of one of the ingrids just before a victim attack. As each ingrid is specifically calibrated for their pilot, this would normally mean death. However, the goddess is dead, links with Zero's nervous system and physically shows itself to him in a vision. After a few moments, the Ingrid link ends up uh interlinking with Zero, and he is pulled free by the Ingrid's pilot, who then takes it into battle with the victim. Zero is rushed uh unconscious to the Academy sick bag.

What Aged Well And What Didn’t

So, I'm gonna be honest with you on a personal note, it's definitely a product of its time between the character design, the detailing, the dialogue, but it's not bad. It's one of those shows where maybe you just had to be there at the time to naturally appreciate it for what it is, but watching it in 2026 will have you thinking about how far we came along and the quality of animation. The mechs are CGI with these iRobot doll-like faces on them, which I'm having mixed feelings about. The theme of the series seems to be teenagers being selected and conditioned to be child soldiers paired up with a member of the opposite sex to fight in an ongoing war with aliens. I would say that it's Darling the Frost

Themes, Comparisons, And Final Rating

for the 90s kids, but to be fair, pilot candidate crawled and fell through the cracks for Darling and the Frost to Sore, or at least that sort of premise where every male pilot must have a female assisting him in a way. And uh, this one was a little more implied than obvious because with Darling the Frost and similar anime to that, is why they made it more on the nose, the implication of that. In fact, I'm gonna talk about Bondred sometime this month, anyways. So, yeah. And what's even crazier is that this is from Studio Zebik, who is known for productions like Zoy, Faulkner, Madesico, Shaman King, Dean Angel, and so much more. It may have been lost of time, but despite everything, I think it's passable in the right move. So I want to say on a good day, I'll give it a 7 out of 10. On that said, I'm gonna go ahead and close this out. Happy seven good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night, but ultimately stay nerdy and take it easy. I'm zoning out.
