Buddy Complex: A Time-Loop Mecha War That Almost Clicks
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A kid walks to school like it’s any other day, then a giant robot drops out of the sky and everything breaks. That’s the kickoff for Buddy Complex Resolve, and we jump straight into why its time travel hook still works even if the character bonding sometimes moves too fast.
We talk through the full setup: Alba Watase gets rescued by his classmate Hina Yumihara in a mecha, hears a cryptic warning about Dio, and then wakes up about 70 years in the future. Now he’s surrounded by soldiers, politics, and a war between the Free Pact Alliance and the Zogilia Republic. We unpack how the show uses Valiancers and “coupling” compatibility to sell the idea that the right partner can change the outcome of a battle and maybe the fate of the world.
From there, we dig into the character triangle that drives the story. Alba’s refusal to write Hina off, even when she’s on the enemy side, becomes the emotional spine of the series. Dio Junior Weinberg is framed as the other essential connection, and we get into why that friendship can feel more like a shortcut than an earned arc, especially in a short 12-episode mecha anime. We also share our overall impression: plenty of action, a solid baseline for genre fans, and a final score of 7/10.
If you’re into mecha anime, time loop storytelling, and rival factions battling over the future, hit play, then subscribe, share the episode with a fellow anime fan, and leave a review with your own rating. What’s one mecha series that actually nailed the “two pilots, one bond” dynamic?

Mecha Monday Intro And Setup
SPEAKER_00What up, gang? It's JB and the Zone Podcast is back at it again with another review. It's Mecha Monday. So today's topic is Buddy Complex. Oh boy. Here we go. So Buddy Complex resolve revolves around the main character, Alba Watse, an ordinary high school boy. He lived an average everyday life commuting to high school in the city. On the first day, back after summer break, Alba is attacked by a giant robot that appears out of the sky. He pursued through the city. His classmate, Hina Yumihara, appears in a robot of her own. She rescues him and tries to tell him cryptically that Dio is waiting before she sends him to the future and he then disappears. Alba wakes up, finding himself 70 years in the future, where the Free Pact Alliance and the Zogilia Republic are at war with each other. And they also meet Dio Junior Weinberg while you're there. This begins Alba's new wife as a pilot of the Free Pact Alliance, and together with Dio, they will change the fate of the world. So, Alba, as the main protagonist, he was pretty much just chilling, um, good at athletics like basketball and whatnot. And he went from being a Japanese high school student from 2014 to fighting soldiers in 2088. His uh mech, and by the way, the mech in these in this show is called uh Valancer. Bally answer. He pilots what's on, and later it becomes what's on next. He's actually exceptional compatibility as a couple, and he should probably see Hina as a Zogelia pilot with no memories of him from past, and even tried to kill him when he offers hand to her to come to Luxon's topic. And despite knowing that Hina was the enemy, Alvo doesn't want to fight her because she's the girl who saved his wife. And after another encounter with Hina and he talked to her, Alba almost convinced she was not the same Hina as the Hina Yimaharmer that saved him, but he doesn't seem to care about anymore at when he invites Hina to join the Sickness after her father's death, even though his effort to bring Hina to his side is ruined by Bizone or Bison, however you pronounce it. Later, he realized that she is indeed the same Hina who saved his life and decided to save her from her fate. Hina, the main heroine, was the first year at Sailor High School, and she was Alba's classmate who ends up next to him in class following seek changes after the break and seems to have feelings for him. But she keeps acting cold, stiff, and formal around Alba and makes Alba think that he did something to her, but you know that's how it is. Like, uh, if they like you, then they're gonna act like they don't like you. It is what it is, Alba. Like, just kind of get past that. You gotta get past that. She's actually a mecha pilot from the future who was on a mission to protect Alba from opposing Mecca from the same future with her who wants to kill him. She sent Alba into the future where she had not yet met Alba and served as a pilot of the Zogilia Republic, enemy of the Free Path Alliance. And in Zogilia, Kina is the daughter of the veteran lieutenant commander of the Zogilian military, Victor Royazon. She was assigned to Alfred Squad as part of the Fortuna, but later transferred to Zogilia's admin muro as the pilot of the coupling valiant Sarkara. During her first encounter with Alba, she's confused that an enemy pilot knows her name, even tried to kill him when, you know, all that total duty stuff that I already mentioned. And what was that? Intrigued by Alba's kindness after he saved her when they were stranded together on deserted island, even though they were each up enemy soldier. And he also gave her the pink cat hairpin that belongs to Hina Imahara. Uh, but it calls her childhood friend Bigon, who was in love with her to scold her and despise Alba. Last but not least, we got Dio, a 16-year-old A pilot from the Free Pat Alliance, piloting uh the Valiancer Bradyon, that's later uh called Bradion next. He's a calm, stoic uh type, but he always has a strong sense of justice in his heart. He usually looks down on Alba, and after the images of Alba's memories during coupling, using the old vally answers, he starts to weave Alba and helps him get through get through to Hina and Savoring. The Free Path Alliance, formerly called the Confederate Treaty of Liberty, is in a long-standing alliance between Japan and North American and Western European countries to counter the advance of the Zoegilia Republic. Meanwhile, the Zogilia Republic, formerly called the Republic of Great Zoegilia, is a small nation that quickly grew into a superpower by conquering neighboring countries and expanding its territory along mainland, Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia. My impression of this series is that they create a time loop that by having this kid from the past get roped into a war in the future while trying to imply the deep friendship between Alba and Dio, but it just feels like force in such a short time. I mean, there might be a boy's love allegory there, but I'm not that sure. It feels like a Naruto Sasuke type of synergy, but it was only 12 episodes, so it just didn't feel convincing that they were supposed to have this deep friendship because it just met. I didn't it just met and you expect them to be close friends, but not gonna lie, it's just okay overall. Yeah, there's plenty of action with their balance and all that, but it's here just feels standard. It checks some boxes as a mecha anime, but I just wasn't as impressed as I was with that girl. So with this, I'll give it a 7 out of 10, you know, standard, like it's solid, but I wouldn't highly recommend it. Like, it's not that bad, it just it just eh, hey, if you're a mecha fan and you pretty much seen it all, but never seen everybody come like, well, hey, there's a show that you didn't watch that's up your hour. You can watch it if you want to. I'm not gonna hold a gun to your head about it, but is there if you wanna watch something that involves Mecca and you know? So with that means uh, I'm just gonna go ahead and wrap this up. Go ahead and have yourself a good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. But ultimately, take it easy, stay nerdy, remember that great days are coming. I'm gonna go ahead and zone up out of here.
