Back Arrow: A Mecha Anime Built on Conviction!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A giant wall cages an entire continent, and the people inside worship it like a god. Then a second supply capsule falls out of the sky with something that should be impossible: an amnesiac man who says he came from beyond the wall. That one arrival is enough to scramble a decades-long war between the brain-first Republic of Lutoh and the honor-first Empire of Rekka, both fighting for land, resources, and the Bind Warpers that let pilots summon Briheights.
We dig into what makes Back Arrow stand out as a mecha anime with a clean, addictive power system. Conviction is not just motivation here, it’s literal energy that shapes your mech’s form and abilities, and losing a battle can make the pilot vanish. Back Arrow’s Briheight, Muga, breaks the rules through absorption, shapeshifting, and feats that shouldn’t exist in this world, which pushes the story straight into mystery: what is the wall, what is “God,” and who is really controlling Lingland?
From the Edger Village crew and the Granedger dreadnought to Rekka’s bitter betrayals and Lutoh’s political drama, we run through the cast, the standout designs, the music, and why the tone is funnier than you’d expect. If you’ve been looking for a mecha starter pad that still has real stakes and big ideas, this is your nudge. Subscribe, share the episode with a fellow anime fan, and leave a review, then tell us what conviction you’d want powering your own Briheight.

SPEAKER_00What up gang? It's the Zone Podcast back at it again with another review. It's another Mecca Monday, and today's topic is Back Arrow. This series takes place in the land of Lingland, a continent completely surrounded by a massive wall. The people of Lingoland revere the wall as a god, believing that all of existence is contained within and that the wall protects and provides for its inhabitants. While the land consists of several territories, it is mostly dominated by two powerful nations: the Republic of Luto, which values intelligence and diplomacy, and the Empire of Recca, which values honor and strength. These two nations are in constant conflict with each other over obtaining land and Rokuho capsules, which are sent from an unknown location once per month and land in a predetermined regions in Lingland, containing provisions and weapons that the people of Lingland consider gifts from the wall. Some of these capsules contain devices known as bind warfers, which are these metallic armbands that allow one to summon and control a giant mechanical armor known as a Bright Height. A Bright Height's appearance and abilities are tied to one's conviction, the thing they believe in above all else. Conviction is also recognized as an energy that flows throughout the world, powering various forms of advanced technology found within Lingolin and granting some people special abilities outside of operating a bright height. Being defeated in battle while controlling a bright height causes the user to disappear. One day, after a Rakuho is recovered by Wreck of Forces, a previously unheard of second Rakuho lands in Edger village on the outskirts of Lingland's Icky region. Inside is an anesiac young man whose only memory is that he is from beyond the wall, and taking the name Bat Arrow, he seeks to journey back over the wall to restore his memory, entangling himself in the conflict between the two nations. Now, let me tell you, within the first episode, it's already much better than I'll know a zero. What can I say? Uh great designs for the characters in the bright heights. I like how cultural they are having clothing that ranges from cowboy western to far east nobility. I like the sound design and music's a legend for this anime, especially knowing that a Lisa song is used for the opening theme, a banger always. Back arrow, he's pretty funny for amnesiac fish out of water. His Bright Height, Muga, is a blue and white humanoid lacking a solid conviction. Muga is composed of a malleable gel-like material that absorbs physical attacks and is capable of feats generally thought impossible for bright heights, primarily the ability to destroy bright heights without killing the operator. Muga is also capable of uh shape shifting and unlocking new abilities seemingly on Arrow's whim, such as morphing into a sword other bright heights can wield and or spontaneously growing wings to fly. Arrow also appeared to be able to operate his bright height for far longer than most people, once keeping Muga manifested for nearly five hours while the average user struggles to maintain their armor for more than one or two hours. It is later revealed that Arrow was sent to Lingolin by God, quote unquote, to destroy the incontinence and all of its inhabitants. When his destructive power manifests, he's unable to remove his divine warfare and deactivate Muga, and the Bright Height seemingly moves on its own beyond his control, emitting a golden light that erases conviction particles and kills whoever it touches. Oof, the lord. Then we have Atlee Ariel, the sheriff of Edgeon Village, and after her father passed away, her Bright High Ryuju manifests as a pink and white feminine humanoid that can use whiff-white weapons stored in his forearm. Atle's conviction is I'll manage somehow, allowing her to easily slip through most attacks unscathed. However, her gentle nature makes Ryuju fairly weak in combat. Ryuju possesses a special attack named Lightning Whip that allows her to charge her with weapons with electrical energy. And later Atlee is named the Queen of the New Nation, uh Grand Edger United, based on the flying dreadnought that they were riding around in the Grand Edger. We have El Shaleen, the granddaughter of Berthling, the chief of Edger Village. Her bright height is the yellow and green uh shadow, uh spelled S-H-A-D-O-H. It's a feminine form of equipped with basic blast is mounted on the forearms and wings, shadows of uh primary ability derived from Elsha's conviction, survive no matter what, is to merge with the flying dreadnought Grand Edger, acting as the figurehead of on its prowl and allowing Elsa to steer it. Grand Edger is initially buried beneath Edger Village, but is awakened by Elsa's manifesting shadow for the first time, and its emergence destroys the village force and is the happiness to move to the ship and accompany Arrow on the journey, kind of given Goring Lagonfog right there. Later, it is revealed that Grant Edge can be kept on course without shadow by using a residual conviction system built onto the ship, but requires Shadow to be attached for anything more complex. Soon after departing on Grant Edger, Elsha's uh grandfather stepped down as the chief of the village past entitled her. She later stepped down from being a chief to allow Atley to become the queen of Grand Edger United, claiming that Helm and Grand Edger was shadowed is big enough responsibility on his own. Okay, no, no. We have Big Namital, the longtime friend of Atlie and Elsha. Despite his postpoint arrogant attitude, he's actually rather cowardly and unlucky. He avoided his village coming-up age trials and is inclined to take the easy option in a difficult situation. As a result, he is easily fooled and swayed by more intelligent, uh willful people. Uh, because of his traits, he his allies often have difficulty determining Bit's worth as part of Grand Edge's crew. So Shu B, who I'm going to talk about in a minute, names him Admiral Attactus, an ultimately meaningless title. Uh that kind of reminds me of uh, if y'all remember Lab Rats, where they gave Leo that title, uh missing specialist, but that's just a useless title. Or even better, if you remember Futurama, where uh Fry got promoted to executive delivery boy, but Professor Farnsworth said, you know, no, no, it wasn't Professor, uh, it was Hermes that was saying that, oh, well, you know, it's a useless title, but just makes them feel better about themselves, and you know, it kind of does, and you know, it works. So uh yeah. So this bright height, uh Kitan manifests as a giant biome warper, which can be attached to Grand Edge to allow it to assume the giant humanoid mecha form bright height grand edger. His conviction is rely on damn near everyone. I'm not kidding, that's verbatim, that's his conviction. Rely on damn near everyone, which allows him to draw strength from others and further combine Grand Edger's Bright High configuration with uh Director to form Ranreca, which he declares is the power of all three of Lingolin's major nations united. See what I mean by the Duran Lagon vibes. Now we have Sola Atlan, uh the doctor of Edge of Village, a man possessing vast knowledge of buying warfare in Bright Heights and their connection to the users' willpower convictions. He claims to have wandered the world for some time before settling in Edge of Village. His real name is Werner Conrad, brother of Prax Conrad, who I'm gonna talk about in a bit. He was formerly the armory supreme of Luto, but was forced to leave after he caused the accident that created uh fine for Athenae Forte's uh split personnel. I'm gonna explain her in a bit. Uh his conviction, according to Rudolph Condator, I'm gonna explain in a bit, is run away from faith, which is grants his bright high uh with his name, uh Halanosh, the ability of acceleration, allowing it to move at speeds fast enough to look like teleportation to an outside observer. By the way, rest in peace to the doctor. Yeah, that was kind of a spoiler because you know, I kind of do want people to uh watch this, but then again, it's been out for a while, so if you you know, it's not news, but uh I'm sorry, but that's probably gonna be like the only spoiler, hopefully, if I keep my mouth shut up. All right, keeping it going. Shu Breck is former high diviner, an insect scientist who monitors Brockhoe capsule arrivals and directs the army to retrieve them. He has been friends with General Kai Rodon since childhood. I'll explain Kai in the myth. Uh, he and Kai were sold into slavery as children and have worked their way up as part of a plan to change Wreca's government from within. He seemingly betrays Reka and his promise to Kai to join him with the Grand Edge crew, finding Arrow irresistibly interesting. In contrast to his intelligence shoes, Stammer is incredibly poor and he quickly tires up after only a few moments of light jogging. Talk about sorry. His conviction is I think, therefore I am, which instead of creating armor, transfer his mind into a bright high that is the Zach Doppelganger. Okay. Now we have Kairodon, the general of Records Army, and Shu B Shout Hood friend. His conviction is Unrivaled, that's the actual name, Unrivaled, which translates his bright high Gigon, a humanoid clad in bulky red armor and armored with a uh guandile, boasting incredible strength. He and Shu B were sold into slavery. I already mentioned that. And Shu's betrayal deeply hurt him and has caused him to swear vengeance on both Shu and Arrow, who inspires Shu to leave Reckless Army. He later gains the ability to merge Iigan with Ren Sen's Repu, creating Gigon Repu, which shares their abilities and convictions. Now, Ren Sen is a devoted, high-ranking soldier in Reckless Army, often accompanying Shu B when he ventures out into the world and later becoming Kairodon's subordinate. She has this cold, tough exterior, but Shu B claims that she's an excellent cook and she's easily forced to win teeth. Now, originally loyal to Shu, Shu's betrayal filled her with hatred and rage towards him, and she became fully devoted to serving Kai and killing Shu. Her conviction is never forgive injustice. Her bright height is initially named Shu uh Shun Retsu and possessed great speed and agility, but after training and reasserting her conviction, it evolved into Repu. Repu possessed wings and ability to merge with Kai. Mari explained that with Kai. So yeah. Now, the supremacy of Luto is controlled by six nobles called six supremes, with Princess Finay Forte as head of the state and advocate of peace. Now, Finay Forte is the pink-haired, pacifistic princess supreme of Luto, who strongly believes in the power of love and diplomacy. Despite her gentle and kind public demeanor, she also possessed a vulgar, aggressive, and dark split personality called named uh Finawar, signified by red eyes and a darker, wilder hairstyle. Feenair first manifested herself after Finay underwent a blood transfusion following an accident caused by a solar athlete, then Werner Conrad at the time. Feenay later seals this personality using a bind warper, turning the device plaque, but has trouble keeping it under control. She later uses this bind warper to manifest the bright height love salute with her conviction love is everything, granting it the ability to absorb the attack and redirect the energy as rays of light that can repair bright heights and heal wounds. When Fiend Noir asserts herself, Love Salute becomes Love Salute Noir. This form twists Fienna's conviction, and instead of healing others, Love Salute Noir absorbs conviction from other bright heights in order to heal and empower herself. Now we have Pratts Conrad, the commander of Luto's military, Luto's current armor supreme, nicknamed Prax, the Blessedane, brother to uh Warner Conrad, who we know as Sol Atlin, the Doctor. Uh she has a habit of violently retaliating uh to any perceived disrespect towards Princess Finay, stemming from her conviction, devotion to the princess. She's also known as the Braddy uh Prax for her stubborn and haughty nature. Her bright height, uh Paranoble possesses the unique ability to fly unassisted, which she determines as an artificial uh power granted by Lutto, somehow modifying practice by Warper. It also possesses a saber and a shoulder cape that can separate into remotely gilded beam weapons. Uh Zatsu Daidon, the Emperor Wreckka, despite his advanced age and frail appearance, he is a phenomenally strong conviction. I don't follow a path, I make a path, granting his bright height Ogan, enough raw power to level the surrounding landscape with a gesture. Logan also has the ability to absorb conviction from other bright heights in order to repair itself. Because of this sheer power of his conviction, normal bind warpers break down over time as he battles, requiring him to use multiple devices simultaneously to maintain Ogan for any significant period of time. Kind of reminds me of uh aesthetical rogue hero, where the main character had to have multiple of those breakthroughs in order to manifest his sword. Yes, uh, he's he's also able to easily defeat Bry using only a handheld wired weapon. He has also displayed the ability to de-age himself, becoming a fit and well-built younger man. In this state, Ogin discards his cloak and becomes much faster and more agile. Zetsu's convention grants him so much raw power that he is easily able to counter Arrow's abilities solely by a regenerate Ogin faster than Muga can erase it. See, I kinda like shit like that. Even if it's the villain, I just kind of like that perfect counter to the uh protagonist. So now the protagonist really gonna have to try to get that dub. Now, last but not least, we have Rudolph Conditor, the elect supreme, responsible for choosing the ruler of Luto. Rudolph has informants everywhere, which commands a great deal of reverence and fear among the Luto populace. He possesses an immensely powerful conviction, God is everything, and has a vine warp embedded into his body, which allows him to summon the bright height deal stride, which can further merge with a gigantic dreadnought-like machine known as uh diet. Uh Dio Benedicta. There we go. Uh though initially appearing as a massively obese middle-aged man, his true appearance is that of a tall, muscular, and handsome young man with a haircut. Like kind of kind of imagines one of those old-timey print-looking haircuts. Uh, referred to as his audience born. He maintains his obese appearance and constantly indulges in hedonistic pleasures in order to keep himself lazy and distracted, claiming his conviction has the potential to destroy the world if he ever gets serious. What are you, Saitama? He claims he is not human and is the agent of God who has manipulated Lingoland for years as part of God's plan, so to speak. So, yeah, that's all the characters. And let me tell you, there's plenty of action, more comedic than I expected. It has a premise that immediately piqued my interest, and I only wish I bothered watching sooner than it when it first aired, because when I first heard about it, it piqued my interest. I wanted to watch it, I just didn't get around to it, but now that I did, I am very glad I did. I give this an 8.5 out of 10, and I dare say put it on the mecha anime starter pad. I would recommend this to anybody who is remotely interested in getting to the mecha genre uh theme of anime. Like, I'll say, okay, check out back arrow, it's pretty good. So that's pretty much all I gotta say. With that being said, oh happy 420, by the way. I almost forgot. Almost forgot. Other than that, have yourself good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. Ultimately, do take it easy. Remember to stay nerdy, and that great things are coming. I am zoning up and out of here.
