The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Nails the Vibes, Struggles with Plot
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
They finally made a Super Mario Galaxy movie, and we walked out smiling… then immediately started arguing about why it works so well and why it still leaves us wanting more. We’re JB and Playboi, and we break down what hits hardest on the big screen: crisp animation, strong voice acting, and a steady stream of Mario universe references that feel designed for fans who grew up hunting secrets in every level.
We get into the cameos and Easter eggs (including the kind that feel like a wink toward a future Super Smash Bros movie), plus the stuff that annoyed us: trailers and announcements that basically hand out soft spoilers before opening weekend. We also talk character choices like Yoshi’s spotlight, Star Fox showing up as more than a quick cameo, and the debate around Rosalina’s backstory changes and limited screen time. And yeah, we say it out loud: the plot often feels like it’s happening in the background while the movie speedruns fan service.
Then we zoom out to the bigger play. If Nintendo and Illumination keep going, this could turn into a full Nintendo cinematic universe with spin-offs that actually fit their genres: Luigi’s Mansion as horror-comedy, Star Fox as story-driven sci-fi, Zelda as classic fantasy, even Fire Emblem as political war drama. We also touch on what other franchises can teach Nintendo about rights, long-term planning, and competition in the video game movie space.
If you’re watching for nostalgia, visuals, and references, you’ll have a great time. If you’re watching for a tight story, you’ll hear exactly where we think the next movie needs to level up. Subscribe, share this with a Mario fan, and leave a review with your take: do you want more plot, or more references?

Welcome And Quick Verdict
SPEAKER_00What up gang? It's the Zone Podcast and we're back at it again with another review. This time I'm going to be talking about the Super Mario Galaxy movie. I'm JD and joining me today is Playboy. And let's go ahead and zoom right in on it. Playboy, how you feeling about this movie?
SPEAKER_02Man, 30 years old. This shit took way too long, but I'm here for it. Glad to be alive. It was a good movie. I give it like a solid, I don't want to be man, I'm gonna give it a good 10 out of 10, just because my boy Starfast was in there. You know what I'm saying? Yoshi came through, one of the main characters. Don't be coming to get too much love this time, but I feel it. You know what I'm saying? He got a time of time in the first movie. So I guess they made room for different cameos. Um I really, I really enjoyed it as a Mario fan. Like I like the uh the references, the cameos made. Um voice acting was definitely good, animation was great. It's a good movie. I think it came out at the perfect time. Even though it's the it's been a long time since we got like a movie, like they even think about like you know what I'm saying, Nintendo making movies. We would have thought about this years ago, but to come up with it now, like they definitely I I can see where the time came, man, because you can't rush perfection. And I'm definitely liking what they're going with this right now.
Game References And Missing Mario Kart
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and plus the technology was probably not there for it uh as ambitious as it could be. It's like honestly, I swear to God, I thought I was gonna see uh a whole bunch of them going around. Like I was expecting some Mario Kart shenanigans, uh at least in a trailer or something on that, but uh either I blinked and missed it or we didn't get that.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I feel like um didn't they do like a rainbow road reference in the first one? I think they're trying to pick pieces of it because there was one instance in a movie where they was doing like I was probably remembering the first movie um with the Rainbow Road. Yeah, but yeah, but I I they are referencing games. I think they're just trying to like spread it out and distribute it throughout the movies. Like, so for example, the first one had the Mario Kart reference. I'd be looking forward towards the Mario Party, because that's one of my favorite franchises in Nintendo. I didn't seen it, not that I know of, but um in this one, they had scenes where the uh Mario, Yoshi, and Luigi they were, you know, watching over the castle while Princess was going. And when they was going to different parts of it, doing different chores, you see how it looked like the Super Mario when they would go through different levels and they were clearing up. I was like, okay, I like that. That looks like, you know, they're actually doing like some gaming type of thing. I like that little detail.
Smash Bros Teases And Deep Cuts
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I like that. And I like how you mentioned Fox. I'm gonna get to him. But speaking of references and whatnot, yeah, there was a bunch of in-universe references, but man, you can tell that they're really gearing towards a Smash Brothers movie where I saw Rob and Mr. Gaiman watch out of nowhere.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02That was that was lit. They knew what they was, they knew they was cooking. They knew they was cooking. I know what they they knew they put that shit in there. They was like, yeah, they're gonna eat this up.
Spoilers In Marketing And Star Fox
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. And Fox, I like how he wasn't just a okay, hold on, hold on. Let me back this up. First of all, I didn't like how they spoiled that he was gonna be part of the movie a week before the movie actually came out. We didn't really need that. We really didn't. Like, I mean, we were glad we uh now, oh, it's confirmed, okay, cool and cool. So it's like pretty much confirming that we're going in that direction, but it would have been a lot better if you didn't tell us that. Like, that's like uh saying um I'm trying to remember what was that one uh movie where if you had told if you um told me that they weren't in this movie or whatnot, it would have been a lot better for it. I could swim we talked about it. Like, I won't say it was like a Marvel movie or something, but you know what? I'm not gonna waste too much time on it. Yeah, like it would have been a lot better for if um y'all didn't tell us that Fox was gonna be in this one. But then again, what I did like is how he wasn't just a cameo, he was actually getting involved and helping out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I ain't gonna lie, I thought they was gonna do the cameo thing. I didn't get my hopes up too much. I was happy he was in the mood, but I was like, they're probably gonna show him working on his ship, probably taking them where they needed to go, and that was it. I literally thought it was gonna be the when a pilot scene came up and it was like they need a pilot. I'm like, I okay, I knew that was when he was coming, because he's a pilot. I just thought that was it. I thought that was gonna be his moment. Like that was it, like him just being the pilot for the crew.
Yoshi Spotlight And Celebrity Voices
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but oh no, no, no, like he kind of stuck around for a little while. Okay, okay, cool. That's cool. I give you no point to that. That's cool. But yeah, for the most part, there's a whole bunch of shenanigans with the different power-up uh items. My boy Yoshi is in this bitch, and man, let me tell you that backstory of his when you like just uh rolling around in Brooklyn, uh just doing his thing uh up until he broke that Donsworth skeleton and then he got ran out of town and telling me to that warp gate. Listen, if they had this that's another thing. Yeah, not only that, but the fact that they said that Donald Glover was uh going to be voicing Yoshi. And I'm like, man, if you didn't tell me that, I wanted uh talking differently. Like, it didn't not seem like really that was him. I can't fucking tell.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I really didn't know like until after the movie where they were doing this whole, you know, where they were saying how he wanted to, how he really wanted a role, and how they were saying other voice actors who auditioned four probably should have got it because he's already established in, you know, an industry and they could have gave somebody who don't have a name an opportunity. But it was like, you know, he went out of his way to act it for a favorite because he really liked the Oshi. But I like I said, I didn't I think he did a good job. And I didn't like you if I didn't if you didn't tell me I wouldn't know that was wrong, well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, I I felt like it's one of those things where people get excited and they just can't hold it. Because when when the when the when Star Falls was announced, he was damn near announced and showcased as if the movie was about him, like the poster, the picture. You know what I'm saying? Just all these edits of his old games coming around now. Like, I'm all for a Star Falls movie for sure in the near future or Super Smash Bros. You know what I'm saying? All this leading up to the Nintendo Universe, whatever. It was a lot of cameos in the movie for sure, but um I definitely feel like if they left that information out, it would have made a bigger impact on a movie because I wouldn't if I went in the movies and not knowing Star Falls would have been there and he would have fucking popped up, I probably would have like, you know what I'm saying, like made a scene. Cause I made a scene knowing he was in the movie, like, oh yeah, like damn, he finna be in there right now. Imagine how I would have felt I went in there not knowing that shit. Like, man, I would have been crazy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Characters. But he is my favorite character.
SPEAKER_00Oh, now I remember, uh, I would say shit like Spider-Man No Way Home where if I didn't know that Twin McGuire and Andrew Garfield was gonna be in this shit, I would have been way happier with that. But like, you know, with the way.
SPEAKER_02No, I was just saying like the way he um uh how all uh how Toby had popped out. Like if I didn't know he was in a movie and he made his appearance the way he made his appearance, definitely would have hit a little bit different.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So it's like sometimes it's for the best of like, hey yo, like we all need to know all that, like just enough to like get us in the yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like a it's like a uh like a it's like a it's like a a soft spoiler.
Rosalina Retcon And Peach Rewrite
SPEAKER_00A soft spoiler. Uh but hey, like I kind of did like how just like how you said that uh Don Glober uh wanted to be Yoshi, he really liked Yoshi. It's also interesting that Bree Larson has been a fan of Rosalina for the longest. So her in her dream role here. I'm like, okay, that's cool. That's cool.
SPEAKER_02How you feel about um I'm not sure if you know, but um I I've I've I've seen people like fans of Rosalina kind of upset that they changed her backstory to revolve around peace. That that story isn't accurate with actual Rosalina in the Lord. Like they're like that, you know what I'm saying? Like making them sisters and that whole thing, like literally throws away where Rosalina actually comes from. And oh neck with the star kids. Like, I didn't know anything about it, but I was saying like um a lot of them saying, like, yeah, that's not her backstory, and they changed it off just to revolve around Peach, and they felt like she should have had more uh screen time other than the just first intro. Kind of like they used Rosalina to highlight Peach a little bit more.
Luigi's Mansion Spin-Off Pitch
SPEAKER_00I'll put it to you like this. I I I'm right there with you, I agree, to where I didn't like how that changed her backstory that drastically. And I also didn't like how Rosalina didn't get a whole lot of screen time overall. It just felt like she did her badass moment in the beginning of the movie, and then she spent most of the time being captured, but even then it was like maybe like it glimpsed her uh like one, two times, and then they finally um released her, and then that's about it. I'm like, she barely had to be in the movie, like uh I don't know what it revolved around that. Yeah. And making her Peach's sister, I'm like, it almost feels like the only the main reason why y'all did that to Rosalina is just so like, like you said, made it uh revolve around Peach, where it seemed like with Peach, like, yeah, you know, she's like uh the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, but like how much backstory did she have prior to this movie? So it kind of felt like um they had to do her the service of uh making her like bigger, like give her a bigger role. Kind of like how um all these princesses are being more badass nowadays, because you know how it is back in the day where there were a damsel in distress, but nowadays they're like, oh no, they can hold their own too. So I think it's just kind of crazy how they're trying to give Peach more character. Meanwhile, it seems like with Mario, he has his art in the first movie, but now in the second movie, it's more about oh well, there's a girl that I like, and he's just trying to uh, you know, be a peach present, you know, trying to be her boyfriend and shit. But like that's about it. I'm like, it's almost like uh his art kind of got thrown out after the first movie, like he doesn't really need to grow after this because you know, just there for shenanigans. Um Luigi, I'm still hold holding up for a Luigi's Mansion spinoff. Like at least we need it. Yeah, that'd be I want to say at least one.
SPEAKER_02No, I mean all we need it and see where it goes. All we need is that one. We don't, you know what I'm saying? They did multiple Luigi Man. I feel like one good Luigi Mansion movie would do it. I think if they didn't get about a good one, hour 50, hour 45, you know what I mean, and make it Luigi Mansion, you know what I'm saying? Like, Mario's gone, you know what I mean? Peach is gone. This is a illumination, animated Luigi main character, horror slash comedy movie. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00They could fucking actually, you know what, even better? Imagine this, like, what if they make a third Mario movie, but at the end of it or whatnot, they make it canon to where, like, okay, Luigi got uh he separates from uh Mario for whatever reason, and that kickstars uh Luigi's Mansion spin-off, and then once that spin-off do it, then he comes back on with Mario and Yoshi and the rest of whatnot, and he kind of enters in without it feel like, uh, well, dang, you gotta like really I wanna say make it to where like, okay, it kind of makes sense. Like it ain't it ain't like uh he just went to this mansion out of nowhere, but at the same time, I make it so that way it doesn't feel like homework to where like, oh, you have to watch it, even though it is fairly good hypothetically. Like, say for instance, uh the boys and Gen V, to where a lot of people will probably think, oh well, we don't really need to watch GMV, right? Like, yes, you do, because there's some details that's gonna matter if you watch GMV. So, like, on the one hand, it shouldn't feel like homework, but at the same time, it should uh make sense for like not be out of nowhere. So I know what you're saying.
SPEAKER_02Like, if you were to watch it without watching MV, you'll be like, damn, you'll have questions. You know what I'm saying? But in MV.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You'll have questions, but those they're in the MV. I I get what you're saying.
SPEAKER_00As long as it's like good on its own, to where it doesn't feel like we're forced to watch it, to where, like, uh, how can I put this? Like, uh, oh, you know, like with MCU to where you would watch something like say She-Hulk, and a lot of people hated on that, but at the same time, there was a bunch of things that happened in She-Hulk to where, oh, uh, if you didn't watch it, uh, there's a bunch of things that happened in the movies and maybe other TV shows where uh it'll make less sense because you didn't watch this one show. Um same thing with Miss Marvel or whatever, where like, yeah, if you skipped it, I mean, that's your preference. But uh then again, if something comes up where you had to watch that to get the references and whatnot, then yeah, that's on you. But then again, uh we shouldn't have to feel forced to watch something that we're not interested in. But uh that's probably not gonna be the case with Luigi's Mansion. Like, well, I'm pretty sure that uh the fact that they're doing these movies, we're gonna want a Luigi's Mansion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a lot of people was hoping for for the second movie with the whole, you know what I'm saying, the uh the way it ended, at least.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Almost like a little teaser when the first move where he was like running around in that cancel.
Daisy Reveal And Future Couples
SPEAKER_02That was like a little foreshadowing hint to it, at least. That's what I thought. Oh, speaking about the princess, man. Um it's crazy how we were speaking on they did that the uh Rosalina that did uh uh put Princess Peach on a pedestal. But you know, at the end of the movie, they put um they put Daisy in.
SPEAKER_00I was actually happy about that. Especially when they uh see like fucking decked that fucking uh monkey for wrong stealing. Um where yeah, I was like uh kind of hoping for Daisy at some point. I was thinking like, if not the second one, she's probably gonna be in the third one. And I'm kind of glad that she kind of tied uh her into the uh kind of like with Shadow from uh Sonic movies to where it's like, okay, uh if he's not in the second movie, he's probably gonna be in the third one for sure. And then the ending of the second one uh pretty much confirmed that. Yeah, yeah, I see what you mean. Yeah, yeah, it was uh pretty good can. Oh, I also like how I think they're going for the original look on Daisy to where uh let's just say the modern Daisy looks like a white girl, but the original Daisy looked like she could be like uh South American or something like that. Like she has some a little melanin, a little tan, um a little color to her skin. So I'm kind of hoping they keep that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. Daisy was always kind of a little distinct when she came out. Like she definitely looks like she's from closer to the equator or something.
Bowser Jr Plot And Baby Mario
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and uh, oh, it's funny how like I'm talking about Mario and Peach, where oh, you know how nowadays, uh canonically uh Peach friends on Mario. So nowadays we can be like, oh well, whatever, bitch. I can just match on your sister now. Yeah, but and then Luigi talking about, oh well, you know, maybe there's a princess for me too. Hey, there you go. There you go. Yeah, she's gonna come and save him. Yeah. Oh man, see, here's my thing. Like I said in my Sonic 3 uh quick review, but I have a theory to where uh with Amy, the way she saved Sonic from the middle Sonics. I'm thinking that Amy's gonna be like this badass version to where it's like it's gonna be mainly Amy um getting Sonic out of trouble rather than the other way around. And it's probably gonna be the same thing with Luigi to where Daisy's gonna be um busting him out of trouble more so than he thought. But uh, what else I was gonna say? But uh how do you feel about Bowser and Bowser Jr.
SPEAKER_02Okay, the whole Bowser thing, I like I like the interaction between Mario, that shit was kind of like funny. Um, I ain't gonna lie, he did get me with uh being good, but then I was I was kind of like judging the movie the whole time.
SPEAKER_00So I was telling my bro, I was telling my bro, like, hey man, I'm just waiting for the other shoe to draw. Ain't no way this whole turn up new league shit gonna all stick. Because I'm like, this is gonna be something to have. But okay, he he did get me to where I thought he was gonna betray him right away, but it turns out he didn't. But it took Bowser Jr. Um with his ambition to be uh, okay, I can kind of get behind all this. Like he really did all this for me. I'm like, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I saw I saw I mean like the whole, you know, the the the main villain becoming friends with the protagonist, but one of his not his son or somebody wants revenge, and then you know, kinda like he ended up getting it, then he's like, uh, I don't want to see them die. Like, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Right. Like, and it's crazy how Bowser Jr. was like, oh, all right, well, you know, what are we gonna do? All right, we're just gonna turn them into babies.
SPEAKER_02That's another thing, the baby Mario, baby Luigi thing. Well, you can't tell when they're not trying to give us what we're asking for, right?
Plot Versus Fan Service Debate
SPEAKER_00Like they just had a whole bunch of references, a whole bunch of different um characters and uh BC area that you usually encounter and whatnot, where I feel like uh yeah, uh the main thing is it was just kind of lacking in a very cohesive plot. It just felt like the plot was like uh in the background for the most part, it's like kind of uh fucking around. But I was enjoying it. I I did like it. I like the adventures of whatnot. I'm just saying, uh but hey, I some I'd be hating when I'm brain forty.
SPEAKER_02In my opinion, I feel like this is my opinion. I feel like this movie is like in a sense to showcase like what like what's to come. Because, like you say, like we it's not hard to like see a plot. Oh, go ahead, go ahead. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, my bad. Uh, I just remember what I was gonna say that yeah, uh, there wasn't a whole lot of plot, but I feel like if they didn't do it the way that they did it, we wouldn't get all these references that we got. So, in other words, it's more like they was trying to speed run through the references so that way when we get like a third or fourth installment, because let's be real, a billion dollars worldwide. Come on. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, like they're gonna make another one for sure. Like they they're gonna set this all up. And um, I just feel like them speedrun through these references and whatnot. I feel like they had to have that some point so that way when they make more installments, they can focus more on the plot rather than okay. We technically you're we y'all got all that in the second movie. So we can now um get serious with the storyline.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because I think the first one was pretty straightforward with a plot. You know what I mean? Like there wasn't many references other than like game wise, but there wasn't like showcasing the whole thing. Like the second one was.
SPEAKER_00You had the happy look for them in the first one.
Reference Marathon And Kirby Tease
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like this one, they was just like you was counting them, counting them, counting them. Like, oh damn. Like they was literally showing character, character, character. Maybe you can't make a plot when you're showing brand new characters who are not even in the movie. Like, let's okay, let's talk about the references, man. Mr. Gaming Watch, Sam Chill, Rob, um, Mac, and Yoshi's back. Um, uh, a lot of people miss the Kirby reference with the little stars.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02One of them did a little Kirby float. He was pink and everything. Did the little Kirby float. Um who else was in the mobile? Okay, we saw Donkey Kong.
SPEAKER_00Uh oh, can I mention before I forget? I like how uh they had uh Mario with the blue uh shirt and the uh red overalls um because that was the original design before we got the um modern uh OG red and blue.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the side, the side scrolling Mario.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like the very first one. Like I like that. I like I like that we it went that far with it. But yeah, I feel like that just had to happen. Like we had to pepper in those references now, so that way it's like, okay, to be fair, uh, y'all not cutting corners, uh, going down the line to where it's like, um you don't make it like a pirate that carabin type thing to where it just feels like the first movie was like the most solid movie you had, and then the rest of them just feel like watered down or references to the games. It's almost like you're just uh trying to convince the fans to, hey yo, just go play the games after you watch this because that's really what we're trying to do. It's like it's really just a way to convince you to play the game. Hey, you know what? I was playing Mario Kart before we even went over. I watched the movie, like just because like I was just like, you know, I feel like playing Mario Kart a little bit. Yeah, I love when I came home and got on some.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, I uh uh the fucking reference, but this the stare down between Mario and Foss when they first met.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, it was like, oh, nice ship. Oh yeah, nice nice mustache. I like I feel um if Mario made the wrong move, um Foss would have probably um gunned him down, but it was almost like as soon as uh Mario um complimented his ship and I was like, oh okay, okay, we good.
SPEAKER_02We are yeah, that shit was crazy. How they just looked at each other, Mario, like mostly with shit. What you wanna do? I don't want you, bitch. But Mario just, you know, looking at another guy peach, looking like, who is this guy? You know, Mario can let the other five peach.
SPEAKER_00Oh, uh, by the way, can I also mention how I like how with uh Yoshi being involved. Okay, first of all, with Yoshi, he's my boy and all. But it's crazy how they just met the dude, and this movie treats it like they've been fucking with each other for years, how well they were biting with each other.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you oh yeah, you don't feel like toe now.
SPEAKER_00No, see, that's another thing. Uh that's what I was gonna mention too, where it's like I also like how with Toe, like he was like the uh third wheel before Yoshi, and now he just feels like oh he's being replaced. Like, man, what's this guy doing here, man? Like I'm still friends with this motherfucker.
SPEAKER_02He said that nigga just showed up and punched with my apple and shit. Yeah, Yoshi. I I mean, I can see all of them being I'm honestly I'm I'm glad they made Toad character the way they made him because I couldn't really picture how I think he'd be, but that's I I I can see Toad being like that, like solid as fuck, like toad man.
SPEAKER_00Like it also helped uh he is being voiced by uh Keith. Oh yeah. Yeah, that definitely is a vibe. I I mean I really like I told Homer, bro, like I really at this point, I kinda want Jordan Peel just uh do one um at least like a cameo voice or something like this. Uh bounce off uh Keegan. Just uh just uh classic Key and Peel um synergy right there. I just this for the one time, but I know you got um director roles and whatnot, so I'm like, if you don't, I ain't gonna hold you, but that would be real funny if you did. Kind of like with um with uh Rick and Mori with um Testicle Monster, where it's like uh it's mostly uh Keegan, but it was like that one, it was like the first one, it was the first time that showed up, and then Jordan Peel had like this uh cameo appearance uh at the very end of the episode. But uh yeah, like just for the one time.
SPEAKER_02Make him one of the toes. Just yeah, maybe come out and have a little 15-20 second interaction or something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_00Nothing too crazy.
SPEAKER_02It's a lot of toes. It could be a toe. It's like, hey, 15-20 seconds, get your paycheck and leave. No, I could I could definitely see that shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. What uh what else? What else? What else? Uh oh, you know what? I kind of was fucking with Junior. I got I I was kind of fucking with the way he was moving with the uh brush and everything.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, he was cooking with that shit. I like that weapon. That's a good ass concept. That was open.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was I don't know why, but it was giving epic Mickey vibes for me, even though I'm pretty sure that's not the case. But I'm just saying, like, it just felt like epic Mickey to me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, you gotta think about it, bro. When it comes to weapons and powers and animes and shows, the paint brush is not off the bottom though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like, see, that's like how people underestimate tomb force. I'm like, bro, tomb force is one of the scariest abilities you can have to where you can bend the laws of reality to beat the most ludicrous bullshit you can ever pull up, and literally your own your strength and your weakness is the limitations of your imagination. Where I'm like, if you can think it, you can make it. And I'm like, bro, that is broken as fuck.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, bro. Why why why don't they do that? Why don't they use that power in a lot? Like, the only people I know that use like art manipulation, if that's what we call it.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, uh Cy from um Naruto, Rushagun from Teen Titans, uh Rill from Black Clover.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's that's that's I want to see a little bit more of that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um there's like one guy in um Fairy Tale that does it too. I forgot his name, but I know there's one guy in there that does somewhat. A little bit more often than I thought. I just have a feeling. I mean, you're right though, like not a whole lot, but there's some examples. Wow, what else? I want to say for the most part, we was kind of hitting on most uh, you know, I like the casino scene with uh Pinch fighting War and the Goons, Birdo, uh Mauser, and whatnot.
SPEAKER_02I forgot about Birto. Yeah. You like doing this. Some people's complaining about her being, well, not after that moment, like, you know, well, like I say, the moment a lot of these characters were like just to be showcased. So I and they were there, they weren't gonna get like another 20 minutes. I mean, it was I mean, not another 20 minutes, but like another 30 seconds or a minute. They was already trying to trying to give us a plot, like, you know, like we said, like the plot wasn't too much there. I didn't really realize what the fuck was going on, other than them just running around fighting bosses, means troopers doing whatever the hell he was doing. I knew what they was trying to do, but it was just so much going on aside from it. I would forget about it, like the plot. You know what I'm saying? Like at this point, I'm looking for references versus actually trying to watch the plot. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00So yeah, that's the main thing. Like the references like kind of distracting you from what the hell was going on. It's like you're so busy trying to be that nerd that's like, oh, I get that review. You like, you know, Captain America type shit. Like, oh uh, you're so busy doing that, you're like kind of pretending uh, like, hold on, what's the movie about again?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I ain't gonna lie, man. That Kirby reference had me fucking lit. I'm like, dog, you can't tell me they're not man, no, you can't tell me they're not teasing us. There's no reason to do these things. There's no reason for Luigi to pull out Mr. Game and watch. He could have pulled out Doodle Bob or something else. Or fucking Rob, dude. Rob ain't have to be there. All those other characters in the background, the cool like they could have had anybody.
SPEAKER_00You know what? Kirby making an appearance would have made perfect sense for Galaxy because you know, he and him being an alien, um, them having like space adventure, what I that would have made so much sense, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Even said he's not from that time, he's literally from somewhere else. So if he goes back home, we should follow that. I'm not saying like Mario done, but I feel like us as viewers, the movie directors, and all of them, they just like no that like give us that Star Fox movie, man.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like I see that's the thing. Star Fox, I think, athletes see a movie because Star Fox actually has a plot. Well, I mean, not to say Mario doesn't, but it's more like Mario's, like you said in the beginnings where um usually with Mario games, the plot is more straightforward. Like where Star Fox is like more military, uh, where it's like you go against Andros, you beefing with uh Team Wolf and all that. So it's like you can actually see a movie being crafted based off of what you already got going on versus with Mario, it's like okay, you can reference a whole lot, but it's like you're gonna have to actually like write a plot that's like in movie format to where it's like you can't just like hey yo, uh the princess got kidnapped, go save her. I'm like, okay, uh can you give us a little bit more than that?
SPEAKER_02It's like, is this our lover, a sister, cousin, a friend? You definitely, well, she's a friend, we know that one, but but I mean, yeah, it like like the Fox definitely have more, yeah. Like even the games like Star Falls Adventure, Star Falls Assault, like you played these games, they had a plot through them. Like, when it comes to Mario, and I love Mario, everybody in the world knows Mario. Not a single person in the world who probably don't know him, but it's literally saving Peach. It didn't get to saving anybody else until matter of fact, I think damn nearly.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna say paper Mario was like the closest thing to where it felt like uh plot forever.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they made that into a story. See, now that was cooking. Somebody somebody else must have took off it then. They snapped on that one. They made that one to a for sure. Now I could have definitely seen like a cartoon or a movie being out of that. Oh yeah. They they did their thing with what they were doing now.
SPEAKER_00Man, you know what? They could have done that too. Like, just basically like if they were like were to uh cross over different dimensions, you know, like on some Doctor Strange type shit to where it's like all these different versions and whatnot, and then it's like a paper version, like, oh shit, okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_02I did I see you. Yeah, I fuck with that. That would have been nice. That would have been definitely nice if they like, yeah, I see that. That would have been fucking nasty. Yeah, yeah, bring us the different Mario, man. Metal Mario, then then then then Dr. Mario. Yeah, they give, but listen, they giving it to us. We're gonna probably be about 35, 38, but they're gonna give it to us. I know it, bro. We just gotta hold on. That's it. It took this long. We just gotta keep bullying the uh burgers and shit.
Ratings Plus Theater Versus Streaming
SPEAKER_00But hey man, like, like, see, making these Mario movies just opening the door to a whole bunch of other uh spin-offs and whatnot, because I'm already thinking with the third mainline movie, um, we're definitely gonna get Daisy, but come on, dog. At this point, when are we gonna get Wario and War of Luigi? Because uh those are the main two boys that we probably are waiting for y'all to introduce. Because like uh see uh with Bowser, oh and oh, can we also mention how like Bowser falling into love? Okay, that is canonical uh on an older Mario game, and he becomes dry Bowser. I'm gonna first of all, I'm kind of wondering if they're gonna either revert that or just keep that going. But uh second of all, I'm like thinking, okay, uh they're gonna probably treat Bowser kind of like Edge Man to where, yeah, he's supposedly the main protagonist, like the OG iconic protagonist. I mean, not protagonist, antagonist. Uh but you know, we gotta like cycle them out, like, okay, let's give him a new bad guy to fight. So uh shit. Mario and War Luigi would be an easy pick. And then you just find somebody else to like bounce off between this whole road gallery of villains. Yeah. Uh anything else that I think I think it's Mosa. Excuse me. Uh yeah, like for the most part, I think that's pretty much all I gotta talk about. Um overall, very entertaining movie. Just not that very plot driven, just more like, yeah, you know, you're just here for the references and whatnot. And hey, nothing really wrong with that, just you know, critically speaking, if I were to give it a rating, it's feeling like an eight, maybe a generous eight point five. Because visually, it was beautiful. It was like there was like a whole bunch of shit going on, uh, the animation and whatnot. It just it it definitely wasn't boring. It was like a very fluid movie to where like the angles, the camera working, whatnot. I I loved all that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, the fight hands look good, Corey. I guess it was nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like it looked really good. It looked um there I say it looked spectacular to watch on the big screen. So that's why I'm kinda glad I went to the theater to watch it rather than waiting for it to be streamed because if that magic wouldn't have worked on me that well if I watched it on the TV. But once I do watch it on streaming, it's like, okay, I still like it. It's just that uh sometimes some movies just work better if you watch it for the first time in theaters. Like you need that cinematic different.
SPEAKER_02And I know because I went to the Demon Slayer movies, like it definitely hit different on a big screen than my little 32. Definitely.
SPEAKER_00But uh Playboy, you got anything you want to add on before it goes and closes out?
SPEAKER_02Um well, we hit a lot on the references, and that's mainly what the movie was about. Yeah, I think yeah, we got a lot of the references out visuals.
SPEAKER_00Most of them were from Super Mario Galaxy, but we got some from Super Mario Wonder, uh, Galaxy 2, uh, like I said, the older ones. Like they really tried to uh go through all the different kinds of uh Mario games that they were doing, but like hey yo, like there's like some games like Mario Sunshine, uh Mario Odyssey, like there's so many Mario games that they can pull from at this point. I'm like at this point, uh Illumination and Nintendo they got a whole MCU like project on their hands where they can keep this up for 10 to 20 years and still have material to work with.
SPEAKER_02Earthbound, Starfall, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Metroid, like bro, they can cook Fire Emblem. Yeah, I would definitely go and see Fire Emblem. I'm I'm I'm I'm pretty sure Nintendo literally have franchises for all types of genre for people, like Mario's for the kids and the family. If you like the whole uh night saving his if you really want to see somebody save a princess, you we can watch the Zelda, you know what I mean? Um you wanna see you wanna see some Spotify? We got Star Fox and Metroid. You wanna see some um what else they got? Damn, I have another one in my head. Oh, whatever the fuck Earthbound is, I guess.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna say kind of like um Mother, Mother. Keep calling it Earthbound. Japanese supernatural shenanigans.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they but um damn, it was a it was it was a a game that I was thinking about as the reason why I was saying it. But basically, yeah, they do have oh, it was Fire Emblem. Like, yeah, if you like something like historic war and all that stuff, like in that in that and like something that's now revolving around going out of a space and not too crazy with the power because it's not it's a lot of swords and mages and clear.
SPEAKER_00I mean, honestly, with Fire Emblem, you can literally use Game of Thrones as a template and just write around that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you see what I'm saying? That's what I yeah, something like that. Like, so there's definitely visually and like Nintendo definitely got a bag that they can go in right now. And now would be a good time considering Marvel might be taking a break on everything since they kind of wrap most things up within game. They kind of with a Spider-Man movie coming out aside from that, but I definitely feel like this is a time for you know Naruto. I mean, not Naruto. I don't know why I'm thinking about Naruto. But Nintendo to, you know, step up and get into the movie industry for sure. They wanna, you know what I'm saying, compete with Sony. I think this would be the move. Yeah. They really want to, you know what I'm saying, stay where they at? Because I'm they I'm fucking with them. I'm already.
Sony Spider-Man Rights And Competition
SPEAKER_00Because, like, let's be real. Uh, here's the thing. Uh, in case you didn't know, if you did, so I'm good on you. But uh, in case you didn't know, check this out. With Sony, you know how with Spider-Man movies, uh whole like how we didn't get like a legit hope movie in the MCU yeah, other than that first one, how we didn't get a whole bunch of Spider-Man movies up until now, how we didn't get a whole bunch of Spider-Man villains in those MCU movies and whatnot. Check this out every 5.5 years, Sony is contracted to put out a Spider-Man like project words. Like, you can't use they can't use Spider-Man, that's why they haven't used them in a while. You know, Madame Well, Craven, uh, Morbius, like they're using Spider-Man characters, but not Spider-Man himself. Essentially, they gotta keep doing that at least once every 5.5 years just to keep the rights. Because apparently, uh Marvel fucked up giving Sony the rights to Spider-Man in the first place, and now that oh, now that they got the MCU, the MCU's popping off, they kind of want Spider-Man back. So essentially, that's why it's gonna feel like the Sony Spider-Man movies is gonna kind of suck a little bit. And then with the Spider-Man MCU movies that we are getting, yeah, they're good, but they could have been better if they had the full rights.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've seen that like Disney and Marvel and Sony was all like basically pulling Spider-Man different directions.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So that's why I said, yeah, uh, Nintendo, you can pretty much be the new MCU and like do it right. I mean, with the SIP with the second movie, it's like I said, I'm still standing on the 8 8.5, but all I'm saying is you can't really afford to stumble, especially when technically the Sonic movies is your main competitor. And right now, you know that meme with the flaming horse. Like so far, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Wasting no time. They references and plot. Bro, bro, bro.
SPEAKER_00I'm really not like not literally, but I'm really trying to bully RDC World to come back with a video game house eight. So that way they can make all these references to the movies, to the new games that come up because hey, yo, a lot of shit happened since the last one. So I'm like, y'all can come back with a skin and be like, I have a whole lot of material to work with.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I just seen a skit of them. I don't know if it was new or not. Somebody just shared. And I was like, damn, I wonder if they still, you know, doing things updated.
Closing Catchphrases
SPEAKER_00I mean, at this point, they're big enough to where they don't really have to do a whole lot of skits like they used to. Like they can just do DreamCon and wherever else they're doing. Like, uh, I feel like they're big enough to where they don't have to do uh too much. Yeah. But uh, I'm just saying though, like if anything just comes back with one more video game house based off all the shit that's been going down with the uh games and uh video game movies, and hey, you know what I ain't gonna hold. I'm just saying, like there's at least one more. But uh, what up? That was all you had. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna phone on 4%. God damn. I know I feel that. All right, well, I thank you for uh being on with me. Uh let's go ahead and close this out. This has been the uh Super Mario Galaxy Movie Review. Uh the Zone Podcast is zoning out of here. Go ahead and have yourself a good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. But ultimately, stay nerdy and remember that great things are coming. Take it easy, everybody.
