Demon Lord Retry: When Your Reboot Needs a Reboot
What do you do when a show quietly erases its own first season? We dig into Demon Lord Retry and make the case for a rare watch order: skip straight to season two. From the opening minutes, we break down why the “continuation” acts like a do-over—restoring character arcs, tightening the lore, and reframing the central conflict around control, authorship, and identity.
We unpack Akira’s reveal as the creator inhabiting his avatar, Hakuto Kunai, and why the amulet twist matters: power literally changes hands mid-battle, turning every fight into a moral pivot. Zero’s origin as a dragonborn hero designed by Akira’s younger self transforms a flashy alter into commentary on ego, youth, and the cost of absolute certainty. Luna finally gets her due with a fully earned backstory—her bond with Eagle, the weight of demi-human prejudice, and a fifth-tier spell that reads as character payoff rather than spectacle. Around them, church politics, slavery rings, and a vampire rematch expand the world without the filler haze that clouded season one.
We also look at the “tech as magic” economy: wells that never run dry, rare goods that fund an oasis, and a second boss phase that drags enemies into a game-arena where design is destiny. It’s still a mid-tier ride—an honest 6.5—with pacing taxed by the need to fix what came before, but the ideas finally land. If you’ve bounced off the series or wondered where to start, this guide lays out the cleanest path, the key upgrades, and the moments that actually hit.

So, whenever I watch an anime, I always have like this special rule about three episodes I want to watch and kind of give it a try. See how things kind of go. I guess more than just anime, but I do this for like regular shows anyway, but still, it's just one of those ones where I was not sure how things were gonna go here. The first season of this show, it isn't bad, but it's interesting, I'd say, until you get to the season two. And I say that because if you look up ratings for Demon Lord Retry, you will notice the fact that it has some pretty decent ratings, kind of like a mid, a little bit better anime. But the thing about it is that those ratings are specifically more for season two than season one. You see, this particular anime, it scrapped season one, and even though season two is officially a season two, it is actually the first couple episodes just completely redo season one altogether. Or you see, this anime, it had the same situation that happened with animes like Full Metal Alchemist, uh, Owie Blue Exorcist, where it deterred from the manga setting because the manga wasn't finished. Well, Full Metal Alchemist, I don't think that's actually the case for that one, but I mean Brotherhood is full on the manga. So, but the thing about but for I know for Blue Exorcist, that's what happened there is the fact that the manga was still going, the anime got caught up ahead, and so the anime decided to create an ending instead of just creating filler, it just said we're gonna end the series, and that's not at all how the manga was going, the manga was going in this direction. So they wound up having to redo it with season three and just rewind time without telling us they rewind time. So season comes back and is like, What? It's just so confusing. Well, Demon Lord Retry does the same thing. Season one doesn't follow the manga at all. There's a lot of story content that is scrapped and taken out. So season two in the first two episodes recaps season one and then adds in the additional details that was taken out, which pretty much makes it to the point you can watch this anime starting at season two and just completely skip season one altogether. And to me, that's kind of pointless. Like, why would you do something like that? It doesn't make sense. So it's like, uh I I guess I guess. So even based on my rating of this anime, I agree with some of the critics into it's gonna be like a 6.5 uh if I'm gonna be really nice, but realistically, I'd give it like a five out of ten, a kind of a mid-range anime. Um, it it's not super creative, but it is entertaining, but because that whole shift in direction makes it so much more confusing. So let's let's dive into Demon Lord Retry. You can see what that is. So, first off, let's start off really simple. Season one, we are introduced to our main character, Hakuto Kunai. What we know of him is that he is the demon lord of a video game that was cast into this magical fantasy world. However, he is under the control of his creator who developed this game. So, kind of similar to like Einz out going with Overlord, the developer shut down his his video game after it had been running online for so long. As soon as he shut it down, he was immediately teleported, not even into his game, he was teleported into his character, who was then magically summoned to this fantasy world. So it's already a little confusing in itself. So I was like, okay, that's interesting. Pretty much these dark priests they want to bring chaos to the world, so they reached out to this special goddess, and it's interesting that she granted this wish anyway, uh, for them for her to summon a demon lord from another dimension over to this realm, specifically because their demon lord was sealed away, and they wanted more power to bring more chaos. So it's like, okay, got you. Uh so she did it, and she wound up bringing Kaboto. So, well, Hakato, sorry. So it's it's very interesting, very weird, and how things are gonna go. Now, Hakato shows up, he's confused about why it is he's there, automatically realizes he's in the body of his main villain for his game. So he's like, Okay, well, what's going on? And then immediately winds up running into this girl, Aku. She's an orphan girl, she has injuries, she is heavily mistreated in the village because nobody loves her, nobody wants her. Pretty much normal sad tale. And so it's like, okay, nobody wants you. And her job was to clean the shit literally of the village. And when they didn't want her anymore, they decided to dispose of her and give her to the demon lord because they're like, Oh, we have to sacrifice a virgin. Like, why would we sacrifice our good virgins when we could just get rid of her? So they sacrifice her to the demon lord, she barely manages to escape, but the demon lord winds up catching up to her. Hakuto kills him in one hit because this is a normal I am OP for this world anyway, of course. So after we do that, Hakato he winds up taking her in, helping her out. They run into a girl named Luna and her caravan of people. So Luna is what's known as a holy maiden. So you see, the holy maidens are the three most powerful women, magical women of this world. So, what it is is that they have the most immense amount of magical power, they are authorized to use the most immense spells and things like that. So it's like, okay, cool. Sounds like a plan. What winds up happening that's a little bit different here is the fact that Luna is one of the weakest ones, but her attacks seem like they don't do anything. But it's not that they don't do anything because Hakuto has absolutely no magic. While every creature in this realm has some form of magic, he does not because he's from a different land, and because of that, he is easily susceptible to magic, he can be hurt by it, so he's trying to find a way to defend himself from it. That becomes what's supposed to be the premise of season one, which quickly again changes for season two. Now, Luna's interesting character because the way she's written is a gag character, and she thinks that Hakuto is obsessed with her butt. And the reason that he's obsessed with her butt is because when he winds up meeting her, she immediately attacked him because she sent dark energy from him, easily associated him as Demon Lord, because Akku keeps calling him Demon Lord all the time, even though he says, Please stop calling me that. And she loses, and he winds up punishing her by spanking her because he says, Clearly, you have never been disciplined and you need discipline. And she took that a different way. Of you just love my butt, and you just want to keep touching and spanking it. And I'm like, Okay, so she's obsessed like that. Gotcha. Okay, uh, this is one of them type of situations. Uh no, sir. Um, either way, so that becomes uh a running gag for a little while. She eventually stops that, thank God. And we wound up meeting uh the other two maidens, uh Angel White, who is the eldest sister, and and I'm putting quotations into that because they're not related, but there's sisters in the church. Keep that in mind, too, the goddess, the church of the goddess. So you have um Angel White, you have Killer Queen. So Angel White is the strongest and most is the strongest in magic, and she's the supposedly like the eldest and most wisest and the nicest. Killer Queen is like her name, Killer Queen. She fucks demons up and shit. She doesn't really take Mo for an answer. She also tends to fight almost any single person that she comes up against. Even if you're a bandit, she doesn't care. So pretty interesting thing there. Now, we will go a little bit further into these girls. It's not much to dive into into that because it's not much there. Because until we get to season two, like we do get introduced for Hakuto's alternative personality, Zero Kirosame. Well, Hakuto is the demon lord, uh, Zero is a dragonborn kind of character. I'm not entirely sure. Um, he's just it's not that he's not susceptible to magic, it's just that all darkness doesn't work to him type of thing. Um, and I say that because we get more of an explanation for him in season two. There's really nothing for season one onto that. We're just like, okay, he's just here, I guess, type of thing. Um, and it's confusing how it kind of goes into that. What happens is Akuto is like he winds up running into the dark priest. The dark priest releases a dark energy. Um, I forgot the exact name of it, but what it is is that because it's dark magic, it actually does wind up affecting him, and he can't move and he's like stuck. So it's one time that he's not OP and he's trying to figure out what to do, and then all of a sudden magically just transforms into Zero, and then Zero cannot be touched by the dark. It's called Hades, that's what it was. Uh Hades, the dark entity, cannot touch Zero. Zero is like pure light, but he's also a completely different personality than Hakuto. Hakuto is fully in control of well, the the person, the creator is fully in control of Hakuto. However, it's a little bit different. You have a great day, okay? I thought I paused. Uh, I'm gonna have to edit that out. Alright, so Hakuto is in full control. Well, no, so the creator is in full control of Hakuto. However, the creator has absolutely zero control of Zero. Whenever he's in the Zero form, he has he has no control whatsoever. However, it does seem as if Zero does have some of his uh, at least like it has his knowledge, but his a whole different personality. Very like, I'm the hero, I'm bound like that, I'm cool like that, type of thing, and it's like, okay, well, whatever, I I guess, type of thing. But he has no control, he's just there, and so he absolutely hates it. He doesn't like ever switching to Zero specifically for that reason. Now, the thing about it is that Killer Queen is absolutely in love with Zero, like just straight up, I love him, he's the love of my life, he's amazing, he's this and this, and all because he showed up and saved the day. She's like, nobody has ever done that for me. Oh, someone who's more powerful than me, amazing! And it's like, okay, uh, cool, I guess. He's not at all interested in her, anyway. So it's what I say, as far as like, okay, it was it's pretty introductory with things, and it's like, okay, we can kind of move forward from that. So what happens is Zero winds up also coming in later on in season one, defeating uh uh a vampire, a vampire prince, per se. Now, he this becomes more relevant again later on because we don't get much details. It's just all of a sudden this vampire prince shows up, he he was summoned, and he's like, uh, why am I here? Why did you summon me? Oh, this riffraff, da da da da. But he can't lay a hand on zero, pretty much. He's like, Okay, uh, you beat me, and I'm gonna find you again to square this up because I've never had anyone defeat me before. And this I have respect for you, but I'm gonna come after you, type of thing. Okay, cool. So now we kind of have an establishment of somewhat of the characters. Let's go a little bit more into what the I guess the story is supposed to be. And I say it's supposed to be because, again, it's completely changed from season two, because this is not the storyline that is hit in the manga. So in season one, what happens is that Luna she has a territory under her control. Of this territory she has under control is a village of bunny people who are extremely poor, very helpless of things, they're pretty much about to die out, they can't farm because the land it has no moisture to it, they get no rain. They've asked for help and has always been pretty much denied to them. So Hakato wands up coming across and he's like, oh, well, this seems like the perfect spot. And he turns it into an oasis using his magical skill points of being able to summon things. Because he was able to summon a well that's not by magic, but by the technology that's based into the game that he created, is that this well will always bring forth water no matter what or where it's at. So again, it's not magic, but it's magic. And that's where I say, okay, that's just stupidly confusing, but we're gonna go along with it. Who cares? Whatever. Just go ahead and do it. Who cares, I guess. So he turns this failing village into an oasis. All the bunny people have jobs, they now have plenty of water, they're able to grow food, everything is great, and he wants to try to make some money out of it. So he's trying to get some rich bureaucrats that he winds up meeting in other towns. Um, he's able to summon random objects and sell them for high prices because they're they don't exist in this land, so they're extremely rare and they look nice. So to him, he's like, these are just like common cheap items in my world, but here they're like near the priceless. So that's pretty cool. It works out for him. Pretty straightforward. Okay, maybe this is like a farm village anime, I guess. Demon Lord retries a demon lord trying to do Farmville or something, I guess. I don't know, just trying to see what's going on. There's not much there, okay. That that's pretty much season one. That's really it. He summons some help, you know. He winds up summoning a uh two of his helpers from the video game that he's from, well that he created, uh, you Karino, who she is a medical doctor, who has this ability to cure any illness or any disease. She even has a special ability called God Hand, where she's able to turn her fingers into any medical equipment that she needs to fix the situation, even turning it into a syringe that has magical healing fluid to it. She was able to heal Aku's ankle because I did fail to mention Aku, she's also um not paraplegic. She uh has a limp, she has a damaged ankle that wound up getting a bad infection to it because no one took care of her. So you was able to heal her, which is cool. And uh, like it's it's awesome to that. He summons uh Tahara, Akito Tahara, who's the weapons expert. This dude is able to pull guns out of nowhere, and it's like, okay. And but he's also like a strategist, he helps build the town up. So that's what we get. Like, season one is very simple, plain game. It seems like it's not entirely sure where the direction is gonna go. Now enter season two. Season two takes a completely different direction. Like, in all honesty, I would probably prefer doing this as an anime lightning review because season two is where things actually become better. So there's not much more I need to say into it. So I'm gonna just get through this really rather quickly because the foundation was laid, then they just revamped it and said pretty much forget about season one. Season two is the new season one, even though it's season two. Whatever. So let's go back in time to a character whose name is Akira. Oh no. I think I'm saying it right, but Akira. Akira is the game developer who created the game that Hakuto is from. Hakuto again is the demon lord character from that video game that was created by Akira. Akira created this game and originally was trying to go to a developer to kind of mass produce it, make some big bucks out of it and stuff, but he focused more on quality than money because they made him a deal, but he didn't like the deal because, for one, he didn't own the game, it felt like they were trying to steal it from him and it didn't kind of work out the way he wanted, and he didn't have control to be able to make the game the best quality that he wanted it. So he turned it down. Now, there might be something more here, and I'm not gonna spoil from the manga, but there might be something more here because also during his interview, apparently the games that they develop, the monsters come to life for real, like a reverse Isekai. So it's like, oh, okay, that's interesting. We don't get any further from that in season two. There's like just little glimpses because what happens in season two is that we get flashbacks, he just randomly starts remembering his past and that led up to him becoming into this magical world because he realizes this isn't by mistake, he's here on purpose. So now we got to try to figure things out. So, Akira, we finally first got a name and we finally get an idea of what it looks like. We also get more of a background for Zero. Turns out Akira had a friend who also helped make a game, and Zero is a character that he created in that game, and this is one that he created when he was young, kind of ignorant and stuff, which explains Zero's personality of just like, oh, I'm bad, oh, I'm like this type of thing. So he hates Zero because it's his old self. Okay, now we got some more backstory. Now we got more of what's going on. Then we get more backstory from the maidens that should have been mentioned in season one. Like, for example, with Luna. Luna had most of her backstory completely stripped away to make her a comedy gag character. Pretty much the same thing that happened to Sakura and Naruto. For you guys who've actually read the manga of Naruto, which we've talked about in previous reviews as well. If you read the manga, Sakura is a well-developed character. She's actually extremely useful to Team Seven, has a lot more skills than they let her have in the anime. It's not until she put in that she winds up actually getting more of her abilities back, per se. Otherwise, in the anime, you just hate her. That's pretty much what happened to Luna in season one. In season two, we understand more of her personality. So Luna has an attachment to this village. She's been wanting to help this village, but the church says no because there is racism in this world. Demi-humans are looked down upon. Quite specifically, if you're a demi-human of like half human, half animal, but if you're also one of a bird race, you are the worst of the bunch. Because apparently the bird races wind up causing an issue with the demon lords that wound up causing humanity to go to war with them that caused everyone to almost die. So everyone blames demi-humans and especially bird versions of demihumans. Well, Luna, when she was a child, she was an orphan, and she had a best friend named Eagle, who was a bird demi-human. They were both tight, very close, like sisters. What happened is that Luna had magical powers. She wanted to become a holy maiden because she thought it would help make things better, and she wanted to bridge the gap between humans and demi-humans. Turns out it didn't work out the way she thought because when she finally became a holy maiden, she worked her butt off to get there, which is also taken away in season one. In season one, they keep painting her out as a spoiled brat. She didn't even earn her right. But in season two, you find out no, she actually earned her way there. She like really pushed hard, went through torturous measures in order to get her magical ability up to be able to be recognized as a holy maiden. So, yes, she may be the weakest of the three, but she still heavily scales in power compared to most magic users in this fantasy world. And that's one of the things that they stripped away from her. They stripped away her friend, Eagle, which is also a major part of her backstory, because we understand that's her reason for being a holy maiden. That's also her reason for being attached to this village, the fact that why she hasn't let it go. She still comes by to check in on it and she still tries what she can, and she's actually happy that Hakuto or Akira was able to actually save the village and save the people. She loves demi-humans, even though they're told they're supposed to hate them. She does not harbor hate for them. So that's a major point of her story where it's like you took someone that had a deep development and you turned into a gag character for no reason. And that's the reason why I really rate this anime low is because they did this multiple times. Like, for example, you is put down as like, okay, cool, you have great healing ability, but who cares, type of thing in season one. Versus in season two, you find out that there's more going on here. Whereas like she and Tahara both recognize that something is different about Hakuto. They don't know that it's the creator, Akira, that's in his body. They just think it's Hakuto. But then, like, he's very different, he's not as cold and demeanor. We actually like this version of him. He's nicer, he's getting things done, and he doesn't want to go back to the way that things were in the game. Because in the demon realm that they were at was it's not necessarily a demon realm, but they called it that because orphans had to fight for their lives. Like you had to fight or you died. That's just what it was. And so hearing Hakato out of Hakuto's mouth and not knowing that it's a cura, but hearing him say, I don't want to recreate what happened there. I don't want to redo that. I want to create something better. They love that about that. And they're like, okay, great. So it creates a different development because Yu winds up developing feelings for Hakato that she's never had before. But it's because of the fact that she's indeed she's recognized, she doesn't know it, but she's like, I feel like my God, my creator, or something is there. I've never felt this before, but it's like I feel a different presence from him, but I'm not understanding. She just thinks that it's just a different change of him. So Haro recognizes something is different as well, too, but he's appreciative of it. He's happy that things are going a different route. He's not having to be that kill boy all the time because he's a weapons expert. His job was to always assassinate and kill. So again, it's like we finally get that development more to these characters that's starting to flesh out more. We also get more of a story where Hakoto or Akira winds up traveling a little bit more because he's still in search of trying to find a way to protect himself from magic, but we find out something extra. In the first season, um, once the Demon Lord is summoned, he winds up going back to the goddess that summons him. She gives him a special amulet and says, take this. And we know nothing about this. Only thing that happens is one time in season one, all of a sudden, Akira loses control of Hakato and he doesn't know why. And it's like Hakato is talking down on him. It's like, you really don't know how to handle this, you're really weak and stuff. And it's like, what? But it only happens one time and then it just disappears. Well, in season two, we get more of an understanding. The amulet is actually what's allowing Akira to keep control of Hakato, but it can also work in reverse. When the amulet starts glowing, Hakato also starts taking control of himself again. So Akira is now also understanding that he's having to battle for control and understanding that he could lose control of Hakato at a time, and Hakuto is the demon that he created. This guy does not care. He will kill whoever is there. He doesn't like getting hurt by magic, he doesn't like getting hurt, period. And that means that if it means he has to kill someone, oh, he absolutely will kill somebody. So it's very, very different on this. So now Akira is understanding okay, there's something more there. And again, something again was robbed from season one that's finally put back into season two. So season two feels rushed. There's a lot of information that kind of happens, but it's because they're like having to fix season one and then make a season two. So it is really bad on how they did that, but it's one of those ones I'm like, I can understand why you're trying to do so. So I I kind of have hopes for season three to be better. So we're gonna kind of see how things go. So season two, we wind up meeting further villains. We meet another villain who winds up being trying to take over as a new demon lord with uh his magical powers. But of course, uh Hakato is a one-hit kill monster, so he showed is an OP monster, he shows up, um, they wind up saving all these slaves because this guy is he's make he makes himself slaves, he's the head of the slavery, and so they wind up taking him down. Um, Hakoto unveils a new ability of himself, something that he was able to do in the video game that Akira developed, which is that if he winds up taking enough damage, because yes, he actually took damage in that fight because magic affects him. Um because he takes so much damage, he's able to enter his quote-unquote second boss phase, where he teleports them to the video game that he created into the magical arena. And in this arena, Hakoto undergoes a transformation, becomes stronger, and has a whole different form to him. It doesn't last, he does wind up reverting back after the fight is over, but he enters his second boss phase. Something interesting about this is that this one resonates to all of the people that he summons from the other world. All of them recognize hey, my boss, he's entering his second phase. Hey, I feel his energy, something's different. So they have that connection to him and they can recognize that this is happening. We also have introduction to another villain. Um, understanding that even though we have our holy maidens, the church does not like the holy maidens, even though they're supposed to be. The reason being, the holy maidens have their own way of doing things that the church doesn't like. We've already mentioned before that demi-humans are supposed to be the evil. We don't like demi-humans, but it's not just Luna. Most of the holy maidens feel the same way as Luna. Well, Killer Bee, she doesn't really care either way. That angel loves all. Luna loves all. So the thing about it is that the church doesn't like that. But the holy maidens are the closest to the goddess. Well, this villain winds up summoning his own special creature that was supposed to be able to be on par to destroy the holy maidens. He was keeping it a secret. Unfortunately, he found out Luna was coming because Luna found out that her friend Eagle was actually not killed like she was told, but was actually sold as a slave. So she found her and was like, Oh, I'm gonna get her. Because Hakato, when he found out about this, made um had Tahara be able to kind of locate her. So they were able to locate Eagle, they rescued her, and so it's a pretty awesome battle where again it showcases Luna's high magical ability. She's able to do a fifth-level magic spell, something that you know you have to be only a holy maiden to do because it takes an immense amount of power. So she's able to do that. She winds up creating this, um, pretty much decimating the entire town, and winds up going against this uh giant mechanical uh magical magical beast monstrosity. Um, but the thing about it is Luna doesn't have enough power to finish it off, shows up Hakato, Hakato winds up finishing it off himself. So he's able to go ahead and still jump in and save the day last minute. So he's able to do that. He was able to like beat two villains into season two. There's a lot more development. We even get a chance to get Zero back again and get a moment where we get a rematch from Zero versus the vampire. The vampire is like, oh, I know who you are. I kind of get a better understanding of who you are now, you Dragon Ken. Which they get a chance to explain that a little bit further, too. Because he is a dragonborn that he was created in his in the Kira's friends game. He was created as a dragonborn, so now it makes sense. It's not just something that randomly said. So now that we kind of get that understanding there, uh the vampire he comes, winds up getting a chance to get a rematch, and he's like, Yeah, but not only that, the dragon, the uh vampire recognizes Hakuto that he has another form. Even though he didn't see him transform, he says, I sense his energy in you. He says, So I know that you could transform. I don't want to talk to this demon lord, I don't want to talk to you. Bring him, bring Zero. That's who I want to fight. And so it's interesting because now we have somebody who knows that Hakuto has a second personality, which in doing so automatically brings Zero out. They wind up having a rematch. Zero does actually take some damage, but Zero still wins in the end. Um, but then winds up escaping away because you find out that the vampire he has a maiden underneath him, his own uh like yeah, I say maiden, like his maid, uh has his own maiden underneath him who actually cares for him and loves him. So she wound up stepping in the fray, and Zero, because he sees himself as the hero, was like, Oh, I'm not gonna hurt you. She makes him run away because she insults him and makes him feel like he's a villain. And he's like, But I'm not a villain, I'm I'm the hero, I'm the bad guy. How I'm not the bad guy. How am I the bad guy here? This doesn't make sense. And then he winds up running away because his ego's hurt, and then you find out that's his biggest weakness is his ego. Which I guess makes sense. So that's what we have for season two. Season two is significantly better than season one. I would highly say don't even watch season one. Just start with season two. Because not only did they change the story, they change the character design, the animation is different. Um, literally, characters' outfits completely change. One girl, her outfit was that, you know, women warriors wear skippy armor and stuff like that. That's how she was in season one, pop in season two, it's a whole different armor set. And it's like, okay, her hair color is different as well, too. And I'm like, why would you change the hair color? That doesn't even make sense. But I don't know. But even in the recap, they don't go recap it to them in their old outfits. They recap the entire first season and everyone in different outfits. It's like, like I said, they tried to erase season one. So Demon Lord retry, season two is pretty much Demon Lord Retry R. Demon Lord retry retry. Because they're retrying it over again. It's absolute nonsense. Um, but that's what I got. Again, I've already given this anime six and a half as being good uh and being nice. Uh idealistically, five if I'm rating for season one and season two. If rating just season two, six and a half, because they have to cram so much to fix season one that it feels like season two is rushed. It doesn't get the flesh out that it needs, and it it hurts, it definitely hurts in watching it. It makes it difficult to watch in some cases. So it's not horrible. Maybe things will finally get better now that they're not having to cram so much in. But that's what I got. So until next time, I talk to you guys until another anime. You guys stay nerdy, great things are coming. I'll talk to y'all later. Bye.
