My Bride is a Mermaid: Merfolk, Mafia, and a Rom-Com That Actually Lands
A mermaid saves a boy who can’t swim, and the law says someone must die—unless they marry. That’s the chaotic heart of My Bride Is a Mermaid, and we had way too much fun digging into how this rom‑com turns a deadly premise into pure comfort viewing. We talk through the early slow burn, the flip into high‑tempo mini‑arcs, and why the jokes land harder when the straight man (hi, Nagasumi) is surrounded by mer‑yakuza parents masquerading as school staff.
Sun Seto’s honor code, swordplay, and perfectly timed enka stings make her both lovable and lethal, while Lunar’s idol‑drama rivalry keeps the energy spiky and unpredictable. We unpack the promise‑ring tenderness, the infamous love potion twist, and the ongoing “chemistry vs. circumstance” question that gives the relationship its tension. Add in Masa’s cool mystery, Shark’s blissfully simple solutions, and a parade of side characters who each bring a distinct gag engine, and you get a show that’s easy to rewatch and even easier to quote.
We also shout out the art direction and parody chops—JoJo nods, Dragon Ball winks, and sharp reaction shots that sell the punchlines without cheapening the world. If you’ve been hunting for a rom‑com that blends slice‑of‑life warmth with yakuza absurdity and school‑yard spectacle, this one still hits. We landed on an 8.5/10: not flawless, but endlessly watchable, with character work that outlives the bits.

What up, gang? It's your host, Jeff Blackestream. Feel free to call me JD, and we got another review for you. Let's talk about My Bride is a Mermaid. And Setting Phantom, I am so glad to have you on for this one because honestly, this anime is a guilty pleasure of mine. Like it's a rom-com spice of life anime where you have likable characters, you have all these funny ass gags, and it's one of the comfort show for me. Like it's one of those comfort shows where I can just re-watch these over and over, kinda like what I did the past few days. Um, I was thinking, hey, yo, you know what? I haven't watched my brides and mermaid in a while. Let me just go back and watch that. And I just I will like watch it and to a point to where I'll even fall asleep on it. Like, not to say it was boring, but you know, like you have those shows where you're just watching it and you don't mind if it's like you uh let the show watch you and you wake up and I don't know. Uh me personally, I'm one of those people where I don't like going to bed with the TV off because I'm just gonna get paranoid, like something might be creeping around in my room, and I'm like, what the fuck is that? I'm gonna say it's more like white noise for me. Like having the TV on while I'm sleeping is like white noise to me, it's like kind of helps me sleep. And my briad the mermaid is one of those shows where I watched it so many times that I could just put it on, it helps me sleep. And I wake up in the morning, get a little laugh, and I'm like, you know what? Today might be a good day. But let's go ahead and talk about the plot. So the story of Mont Briot the Mermaid revolves around this young boy named Nagasu Miccio. And one day during this summer vacation with his family at the South Inland Sea, he saved by he was drowning in the sea because he doesn't know how to swim, and he was saved by a mermaid named Sun Setto. And under mermaid law, however, either the mermaid whose identity was revealed or the human who saw the mermaid must be executed, and in an attempt to save both their lives. The Sun fan, the Setto family, uh where, by the way, most of these mermaids in this anime is Yakuza, so it's best some hitman mafia shenanigans. They reluctantly decide that the only way for both of them to lit it up is if they got married. So that way, if not as soon as part of the family, then oh well, no harm, no foul, then. But let's just say son's father gozeburo don't like that. He damn, I kind of wish Kokugatsu and some other uh father uh members of the inner circles on this one because I think they will appreciate how much love gozeboro has for Son, but it kind of gets a little too extreme. But between Ghostaburo's constant attempt on his life and the madcap antics with a splue antagonist coming along the way, Nagasumi's gonna have a hard time transitioning into his new merry lifestyle. And there's a bunch of things I want to say, but before I even get into that, Sadie, how you feel about my Brightest Mermaid?
SPEAKER_00:This anime, and I know I say this all the time, this anime is actually really cute, and I have to agree with you. It's one of the ones that you just want to keep coming back to as like a comfort anime. I first saw this anime back in like middle school, like way, way long time ago. And I read the manga. I thought, oh, this is just it's it's cute, you know? It has lovable, relatable characters. Just I enjoyed it thoroughly. There were some parts that made me a little bit iffy, and I'll get into that a little bit later. But other than that, I thought it was a very cute slice of like romance anime right up my wheel of house, you know.
SPEAKER_04:Right. I'm doing and as far as the plot, I want to say to those who never watched it, I dare say give the whole anime a chance, but not gonna lie, the first four episodes is gonna feel slow compared to everything else that follows after that. Like once you get to episode five, you're about to see some really funny shit. Uh not much to say about the plot outside of the premise already, and you know, it's in typical anime fashion, uh, where it's one of those anime where it's mainly about them getting into some shenanigans, and then at the last minute, like, well, let me take that back. There's like some mini arcs in between, but it doesn't last more than like two episodes each. Like they might have a little mini arc, um, two-part episode, like a two-episode arc every now and then. But outside of that, it ain't that deep. Uh I will get to a park in a moment, but honestly, I would say the music selection is okay. The artwork is great, especially oh man, listen, where they do these references, like say JoJo, Dragon Ball Z, and others, where I'm like, Okay, I get that reference. Okay. Uh it's mainly the characters that carries this anime where they have a charm of their own, but not all of them. Now, let me explain. Nanga Sumi. I'm gonna be honest with you. Nangasumi is like a mixed bag for me. Like, as a main character, okay, he's one of the more sensible people, and that's fine because like I told Tonara when we were doing what was it?
SPEAKER_03:Ah, damn, damn, damn, damn.
SPEAKER_04:I know we just refused something. Uh it was something for sure. Dandon, that's right. It was the ended and where I was saying that if everybody in that anime had a party map, then it's like it does, it's not that special. So here I'm saying that there's this thing to where sometimes if everybody's weird, then nobody really is, and then it's like, eh, all right, fine. It's almost like when you have that sensible character involved, it kind of makes the weird shit even funnier because you have that one person that's like the counterbalance where, like, what the fuck is going on here? You know, like I know, right? Uh I don't know. It's almost like it's better when there's at least one person that's like the same person kind of commentating on the insanity that's going on. But uh with Nagasumi, it's like he kind of comes off the he kind of a bitch. He he's he's kind of a bitch. I'm sorry, but listen, like his whole arc is trying to be more of a man, but he keeps getting emasculated every now and then by circumstances, whether it's Monkey or maybe uh somebody from the setup family where it he does have his moments where he does shine, but it's just like eh, you know, I don't know, he just kind of come up a little bit made, but then again, I don't blame him because let's talk about his father for a minute. Because with his father, he's like this normal dude up until they meet the um Sun family, the settle families, excuse me, and Monster. Oh my god, Monster. I'm gonna go into detail with Monster later, but the whole point being is that Monster's like this rugged, handsome, aloof dude that he he's cool, he's cool though, and it's like the mother and Nagasumi like kind of have a little crush on him, and the father's like, oh man, like he's kind of coming off a little bitch made himself, where it just feels like he's barely even trying to win back his family. Listen, first of all, the fact that he cried to Masa talking about, give me my family back, and Masa was like, Bro, like, I ain't watching. And then later in the anime, when there was like some chaos going on, and I guess Nagasumi was wondering, um, what's going on with uh my dad or whatnot. And then here he was at the playground on a swing set talking about I used to have a wife and son that loved me. And I'm like, damn, damn. I'm like, bro, bro, barely got any fight in him. Like, even in during the dinner scenes where everybody was eating, and he was like, Hey, honey, can I get some more food? And everybody was just ignoring him. I'm like, Hey, what about me up here? I'm like, bro, like you need to have some more agency into that. Now, the mother, I don't got much to say. Like, outside of she can be kind of a hothead, and it's crazy how there's this one episode with the love post, and that I'm gonna uh go into more detail later. But the mother, it seems like she wears the pants and the uh whole like she's like the real head of the household, and she's like kinda uh make the father look like a bitch, and then also with Naga Sumi, she's like, Oh, well, you know, you're my son and I love you, but when the love post in the episode and he, you know, he looked like whoever uh she was attracted to, and surprise, surprise, Nagasumi was looking like a mana in that episode to her, and she was like, Oh, well, you didn't have these rugged looks before, it's like you just had this dull, featureless face. I'm like, damn, like that's how you're feeling about your gunning husband. Damn, okay. Uh the grandmother, she's one of the other sensible people in the show, but you barely hear from her after the fourth episode. Like, she was just there for uh a little while, and then you know, yeah. But uh, yeah, anything add on to Nagasumi and his family, Sebi.
SPEAKER_00:Um, when you were talking about Nagasumi's mother in like the first manga portion, literally, they go, She's a narcissist, like yeah, she's a flat-out narcissist, and she does not like don't get don't get her wrong. I she probably loves her husband and her son, but literally, she comes out full-blown, like verbally abused, to me at least. Like, she has no moral basis.
SPEAKER_04:Like, I wouldn't say just verbal, it's kind of physical too. You know, that one part where uh the father walked into the kitchen thinking that was his wife, but it was actually his son, and he was having like flashback to when he was young with his wife and whatnot, and then she showed up, man. Like, what are you looking at?
SPEAKER_05:And I'm like, um, nothing, you know. I thought it was you, you know. Um, oh, so you're like young girls, huh? What's up about being young, huh? I'm like, bro, like I made an odd mistake. I didn't know shit.
SPEAKER_00:Literally, and then when she in episode one, when she used her um her husband as a shield to protect herself, like get over here. She's she's something, and then Nagasumi, he gives such main character energy, it's kind of crazy. He's the average boy, the black hair, the blue eyes, the average. I'm kind of there. They just spend the cookie into some dough and said, have a main character. That's exactly what they did. They picked the most generic cooking thing and said, Yep, there we go. And then his father, and I agree with the grandmother, you kind of lose interest after the fourth episode. But he's all but the father's also really like a neglectful, abusive person, too. Like he considers him a loser to the family and favor son more. Like, this is the daughter I could I've never had, and then is like oh wow, dad.
SPEAKER_04:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, but he's also ready to punish Nagasumi for like no reason, and then never apologizes. But what makes me hilarious is that um Nagasumi and his dad kind of have this weird like little like relationship where Nagasumi is always calling him a pervert. And then my favorite part of this entire entire thing is when um they when Nagasumi found mermaid porn. Um found his dad with mermaid porn, and it was like, you should come and watch with me, naughty Sumi. You I'm like, what the hell am I watching, everybody?
SPEAKER_04:This is this is something I mean, you're engaged to a mermaid, you might as well get used to this sort of thing.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly, and then for the fact that even though Nagasumi caught his dad with this pornography, he had the audacity to accuse Nakasumi of having a weird fish fetish. Like, Dad, I caught you doing it. He goes, Yeah, but you're the one who has it.
SPEAKER_04:But no, that's the thing, is like between him and the mother, they'd be ready to sell Nagasumi out in. It's funny, but it's also fucked up.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly. Like, oh yeah, we hate our son, but we're ready to rock him, like we're ready to kick yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:It's like, oh, uh you have to go with these people. You know what the whole lunar art was. He's trying to force him to get married to her, and essentially they just no resistance, just take the boy.
SPEAKER_00:Exactly. Here you go. Here's your son. Bye. Mom, nope, go with him. You're we don't have a son anymore. That's that's what I felt at least.
SPEAKER_04:And yeah, and that's kind of crazy the way you describe how they treat Nagasumi versus how they treat some. It's literally what the Gordon Ramsey means, where it's like, oh dear, precious, and then looking at Nagasumi like you fucking donkey.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, uh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04:Speaking of which, are you done with uh Nagasumi?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, you're good to go.
SPEAKER_04:Alright, cool. Let's talk about Sun real quick. Let me go ahead and talk about her. So I love Sun. She is like one of the funniest characters, ironically, in this anime, to where it's like she's down the earth, she's fairly intelligent, and she has like this Silvery moe, you know, honor among thieves, to where she has like the cherry blossoms and the uh what do they call the Inca music in the background, and it's like all dramatic and shit. She has uh she has swordsmanship, and funny enough, I won't talk about where she learned that swordsmanship um because you know the whole thing between Monsa and Ankana, but I'll get to that. Ah, the funniest thing about her is how air-headed she is, because sometimes she will be in the midst of a situation and just rolls with it. Like, say for instance, um, that one time Nagasoon was going off on Ty about how hard it could be uh being engaged and whatnot. And then she was like, Oh, are you saying it's been hard for you? Marriage has been hard for you, and then Nagasu is like, Oh no, son, it's okay. I didn't mean like that. And then she was like, I'm like, bro, like just like that. I'm like, bro, like I kind of like how Son just rolls with shit. Like, she oh man, like, especially with her relationship with Lunar, where like she it's literally like a Goku and Vegeta type relationship going on to where Sun thinks of Lunar as a friend, but Lunar keeps thinking of Sun as a rival, and even when they had the whole uh school war thing going on, and Lunar is like, I'm not gonna stop until everybody loves me and I'm the main character, and blah blah blah blah. And then Sun was like, Okay, you can be that.
SPEAKER_05:No, that's that's that laid back ass of yours.
SPEAKER_00:Uh I love Lunar and Sun's relationship. I love Lunar, she's like she's just the crazy idle swamp girl. But Sun is Sun is I agree with you, she's very ditchy, she's but she's she's kind, and that's what I love about her. But I also hate the fact that how aloof she is to everything the abused um with this with uh Nagi Sumi Nagasumi's parents, like, oh it's okay, I love them, and I'm gonna respect them so much because they're my in-laws, and yeah, and I don't know.
SPEAKER_04:No, it's like if you no, see, okay, okay. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Sad, but like I gotta say this because you just reminded me of something that kind of pissed me off about their dynamics. The part where it just feels like Nan Gasumi and Son, they like each other, but I'm not convinced that their heart is fully into this marriage. It's almost like they both know they're only engaged because of circumstances, and it's almost like they want to like each other, but it's almost like they kind of treat each other as friends, and it's like, yeah, they're engaged, but it's almost like y'all treat each other more like friends than anything. There's like no romantic chemistry between the two of you. Like, yeah, you're not necessarily protective of son, but as a friend in a way. Like, in other words, kind of saying he's protecting her from shoes, like you know, it's him and Kai, and the one guy we're gonna talk about at the um end of the anime, where it just seemed like he's just being protective of her. But here's why I say this because, like I said earlier, where with Nan Gatsumi, uh he kind of did a four-day slip talking about how hard it is um being engaged with Sun, also with his crush on Lunar, also with how was it something else? Well, there was like a little bit, but not that much. Meanwhile, with Sun, like the only reason why I say with Sun is that even though she likes Nagatsumi, the part the love potion episode, like that's my favorite episode, if case y'all didn't notice by now. But uh Sun, when she noticed Nagatsumi, uh kind of saw him looking like a mafia, like JoJo character, and she was like, I can't help it. Uh, and you're totally my type now, Nagatsumi. So, whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. So, what you told me is you like him as a person, but you're not physically attracted to him. And I hate to break this to you, but you know how they say don't judge a book by cover. I want to say that's kind of a half truth. Like, I'm gonna be honest. Yeah, we shouldn't be too judgmental, but let's be real. You gotta be at least a little attracted to your partner physically, otherwise, you're not gonna entertain that. Like, you're just gonna feel repulsed having relations with someone that you're not physically attracted to. It's like it doesn't matter if you have a great friendship with them, it's like there's gotta be like some sort of physical chemistry going on, and if that's how she feels, then that's how you can tell this marriage is more political than romantic. But that's just me. That's just my observation of it.
SPEAKER_00:I do have to say, from the manga does not the anime does not do the manga justice in this one either, because they do in the manga. I know the mangas ended a very long time ago, but the manga pretty much ends up with them falling in love. Like he falls in love with her eventually. It takes seven, like what is it? It takes them forever to get to it, but Nagasumi ends up um explaining that he does love her, even though there are in the manga there are a lot of uneasy NSFW scenes of him and Lunar. One of the one of the last chapters of it shows him uh shows him basically Lunar turns back into a mermaid after something spills on her and he's rubbing like to dry her off.
SPEAKER_04:Kind of like uh Wait Is it is it a one scene okay? I don't know if like maybe it's an uh manga only thing, but that reminded me of this one scene to where, okay, every now and then Lunar's father come into the picture. Yes, and then okay, okay, this was anime, and so I know exactly what you're talking about. Okay, I got you. So essentially, yeah, uh to the listener, listen to this episode, what happened was, yes, like what Siby was saying, Warri got onto Lunar, she turned back into a mermaid. He was being like an honest guy by trying to drive her off. But as soon as Luna's father came into the room, like she was already dried off, so it was just her human legs, but it looked like he was um because in the in the manga, she's on her hands and knees. Yeah, and so it looks like he was um wiping her butt with uh a towel, and I like the animation, all that shit, like uh the alarms going off. It's like uh sir, it's not what it was like that.
SPEAKER_05:I'm like, uh, it looks kind of bad though. You better have a very drawing application.
SPEAKER_04:No, it didn't matter because he started blasting anyway.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, that's actually one of the last parts in the manga to happen, actually, and it's kind of funny.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, like okay, it's great that they eventually fall in love, but that's just the thing, it's like it's one of those things where like will they or won't they kind of think it would make more sense if it was like they weren't together, but the fact that they were engaged. Well, they they say they're married, but did they I see once again on the first four episodes kind of a blur to me. Did they actually have like a visual ceremony and whatnot? Because otherwise, I'm thinking they're not really married, they're just engaged.
SPEAKER_00:No, it's it's just engagement because even in the um in the anime, that that last very last episode, he puts like when they're at the festival and he puts the ring on her, that's kind of like um like human ring.
SPEAKER_04:Like a promise ring.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Son is wearing a ring given to her by Nagasuma on their first date, like a wedding ring, but it's more like a promise ring. And I don't think it was the festival scene, it might have been. I'm not positively sure. Yeah, the anime ends with Nagasumi and friends returning to a normal day at school. Son is wearing a ring given to her by Nagasuma on the first date, like a wedding ring. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04:Okay, but that's the thing is like it would have been one thing if they weren't even together, like they just fell in love, then got into a relationship, then got married, and all the other jazz or whatnot. But when you put it like that, and compared to some of the hints um that was going on in the um series, it just felt like you can tell that even though they like each other, but it was more like more platonic at first, and the engagement itself was just political by circumstance because it was almost like if they didn't get engaged, one of them would have been killed, and they didn't want that. So it's like, well, y'all gonna have to do this, and it's crazy enough. This makes me wanna review Nisikoi at some point, because that the way they carry uh handled being engaged to each other, that was funny as hell. But yeah, uh that's pretty much all I have to say about Sun for now. Uh goes the Bureau, like I said, uh, he's the boss of the settle gang. Uh, he loves his daughter very much, but because of that, that's why he decides Nagasu Sumi is because it's like he's stealing her away from him. And just to make sure that she's safe, he and his subordinates and his wife decided to infiltrate Nagasumi school as the staff while Golzerborough becomes a home room teacher. Um, the mother Wren is the nurse. We have uh Shark uh Fuji Jiro as Fuji, uh I'm sorry. I'm just gonna call him Shark because I'm like I'm just getting tongue ties trying to pronounce his name. We have Shark as the gym teacher.
SPEAKER_00:That's my man.
SPEAKER_04:Uh Master is the math teacher, and I'm thinking um Nakajima, the octopus. I believe he's the science teacher or chemistry teacher, something like that. Uh yeah. There's more other characters, but uh goes the bro, hmm, yeah. Um he he's fairly funny in his own right, you know, trying to make sure that nobody uh her son or anything like that. And I guess you think the funniest thing he did, well one of the funniest things, like there is the whole cross-dressing that he and um the Edomonic boss was doing where like anything, anyways. Uh I want to say the funniest episode that I remember him in was the one with the cat, where Nagasumi brings a cat to school, and keep in mind that most mermaids are afraid of the cat. Some of them grow out of it like monster, uh, but some like gozeboro, they never really grow out of it. And it was just so funny watching everybody freak out over this little cat, especially the chase scene to where the cat was just so cute though. And at the same time, Monkey, uh Gozabur, the Tripwire Brothers, they were all trying to run away from this cat, and you just think you're like this furry tier two dragon. I'm like, man, that's just a little kid. A little trip. They even had the whole animation of it, too. Uh, who else? Um, before I turn it back over to you, Sebbie. Uh, Ren, she was solid, solid character, like, you know. A good counterbalance to go to girls, a hotheadedness, you know, kinda levels up the whole family dynamic. She also got the whole shivery mode going on for her, but it's every now and then. Uh Massa. Oh my boy Massa. Like, okay, first of all, I gotta say I like how we're gonna eventually review Panty and Stocking. And when I heard Gardevelle's voice, I was like, wait, oh that voice of me. It's Masa. Chris, what's about? I salute you, sir. I'm like, I did not expect the voice of Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamsa, All Might, all that being both Monster and Gardeville, too. I'm like, god damn put it at work. Anyway, Monster's like the cool guy, like with the afro and this ever-present sunglasses on his face, like you never really see his eyes. And crazy enough, during like the first one or two episodes, uh Nagasumi was drowning and whatnot. He masa gave Nagasumi CPR, but they framed it as Masa kissing Nagasumi, and everybody just rolled with it as Masa being Nagasumi's first kiss, and son to this day is jealous. Oh, that's another thing where sometimes Sun kind of questions if Nagasumi's into boys. That was another thing that was kind of funny. Uh outside uh all that, you know, he kind of he's more targeted when he's drunk, you know, like when he goes to his bar. But for the most part, he's like the cool character. And here's the thing there's this one character, Akano, whereas he had this long brother. And come to find out, that was Monster, but what happened was he one thing led to another. I kind of forget uh it kind of blurry. Sorry, maybe 70. You can't fill me in on the details on this, but essentially one thing leading to another, where Monster got into this accident and Gulzaburo was trying to help him out, but Monster had amnesia, and gozabur was like, uh, yeah, you one of us. Like, yeah, you part of Setto gang. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's like kind of like trying to cover up the whole accident. And this whole time Akano thought her brother um abandoned them and she was gonna kill him if she ever find him. And the whole thing is Monsa taught son how to use swordsmanship, and it's the same swordsmanship that Akano knows. So that's why there was a whole mystery thing going on where like they start to suspect Monster. Like, who are you really? Because between you knowing that sword style and having amnesia, we kind of suspect you of being the brother. But of course, Ghost Girl don't want Monster to gain his memory because that means oh, he's gonna leave, but he's gonna want to leave. But uh, Sadie, how'd you feel about Masa?
SPEAKER_00:I love Massa. Masa as a character is he's funny. Um, you're actually right on topic. He's actually one of the only one of the only mermaids that are able to control his human appearance, and sense of that because of his amnesia, um he became the member of the Setto clan, and it's possible his appearance may depend on like his personal identity, so he's able to magically alter his form to keep him from being recognized. But I I love the way he looks the thumbs up, the afro, the when he talks, everyone's like, Yeah, let's I'm gonna listen to you now. And I I love him as a character and agree when I first heard him, I'm like, is that Christopher Savant? It's one of those people that you're just like, is that Christopher Savant? Or in my case, uh, if I look at a character, I can point out who Jimmy.
SPEAKER_04:Nah, see, that's me when it comes to Patrick's face. When when I hear Dio, I'm like, wait a minute, is that Patrick? Because I'm like, I never recognize that voice anywhere. I'm like, ooh, like it is kind of like almost like you can just hear the wave, and it's like you just hear a familiar sound wave going through your brain. I'm like, I recognize that voice.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, that is. We have a game in my house that when we scroll past animes, um, we're like, let's play the is it the J. Michael Tatum game? And we're just looking at characters. And I remember this one time going off topic. I looked at this anime and went, that's J. Michael Tatum. Nate, Nate goes, no, it's not. We turn that on. Lo and behold, I'm like, I told you, I can tell the power. But anyway, I it's the running gag, the whole thing. I I like him as a character. He's that cool, collective, like, yeah, type of dude. So I like him. He's one of my favorites. He's not my most favorite, but he is one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_04:Gotcha, gotcha. Monkey. Okay, she's a little funny, you know, like she's like this petite assassin in the conch shield. That's why she's called Monkey the Conch. And it is kind of funny how she's like trying to assassinate um Nagasumi at first, and then every now and then she tries to kill him, or like she kind of uh plot against him every now and then, especially with the whole cat episode and whatnot. So she called him uh calling Nagasumi Sea Louse, all that shit. And I guess it's like the same thing with go to brewer to where she cares for Son to a point where if it helps uh the boss uh get his daughter back, so to speak. Um she will happily assassinate Nagasumi to bring son back to um the setup in the sea and all that shit. You know, she's just really being loyal to the family, so I can't really false her, but it's just funny how that works out. Uh short, okay, short. He's kind of funny where like especially what was it, the fifth or sixth episode where Nagasumi and Chim was up on the upper levels and trying to uh get a peek at the girls, and well, Nagasumi wasn't really trying to, but Tim wanted to, and Fuzy Shiro.
SPEAKER_05:Yes, I got the name right.
SPEAKER_04:Um, it did not sue me, huh? Uh what are you doing up there? Like, you're a naughty boy. You know what? I'm gonna eat you. That's the funny thing. Like, I like how unlike everybody else, where they have like the uh mermaid tail, he just had this big shark head and just monster. Uh outside of that, not much to say about him. I just thought he was funny whenever he's being used every now and then. Like I kind of get it, you know. I kind of get the attractions like because I swear to God, if I show this to two of my other women friends, one's up being Mira Jane, I'm like, why is the thing gonna be like Fuzhiro? I'm like, god damn it, really? What I'm I I'm not arguing against it, but I'm like, I kind of hate how telegraphed that would have been to be like, damn, like I thought you were gonna surprise me. Okay, but no, it's cool.
SPEAKER_00:That's that's my favorite character out of this entire anime. Like, if you put him in front of a bunch of my brightest movie characters, I'm pointing out Shark Fujiro out. I think he's so impatient, it's funny. Like, his the best way to end everything is to eat the person, eat the source, so that everyone can just go home and forget about everything. He's a simple man, and I read sweet, eat, repeat, done. That's it. And then when he speaks, I like the fact that it's always like he's asking a question.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, let's see. In fact, let me let me think. Okay, his voice actor, his English voice actor is Brian Massey. Yes, I want to see what he did. I want to see what he did. You he's lad from Boncano? Okay. Oh, wait, hold on. He was he was in some shit that I was. Um, Franz from Blaze Rider, okay. I I remember that one. He's Monkey D Dragon from Wumpies, okay, okay. Uh Ulon from Drag Monkey Kai, okay. Uh he was in Course Princess, he was at um Detective. Uh he was a bunch of characters in Fairy Tale, he was in Darken and Black. Uh Cat from Sands, okay, okay. Um Space Danny, he was off, okay, okay. Uh Jerry from D-Gray Man. He was in Norigami.
SPEAKER_00:He's in Black uh he's in my character as Jiro's dad and The Crimson Riot.
SPEAKER_04:Oh shit, okay, okay. Uh he um Kokitis from Ooh, I was trying to pronounce the name right. It was Kokitis, my bad. Yeah, like you were saying, uh Masusaki from Psyche K. Ooh, I want to review Psyche K because that's one of my other comfort anime where I can watch Psyche K all day. Uh I'm sorry, look, dear listener. I'm kind of geeking where I'm like, hold on, I need to lose this dude up. I want to see uh he was rady from um Black Clover. Okay, cool, cool, cool. Uh sometimes you'll be like that.
SPEAKER_00:He plays a lot of additional voices in a lot of different animes. I agree with you. Uh Show by Rock, one of my all-time favorites. Can watch that all the time. My first girlfriend is a cow. Don't even get me started on that one.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, I saw that. Okay. I'm gonna get back to you when we to review that one because like I'm gonna talk about that one too. Yeah, okay. He was in a bunch of uh stuff. Okay, I respect it, I respect it. Uh was there anything else you want to add on to the Fuji's hero?
SPEAKER_00:No, that's it. He's a shark, he's funny.
SPEAKER_04:Okay, let's talk about the three stooges now. Uh, Mongo, Borio, and Ajitaro.
SPEAKER_05:When these three clowns do something with the description.
SPEAKER_04:I lost my shit. Especially that epic uh opening that they did, you know, uh introductions where it's like they almost like they were like action heroes and they had that whole coming soon title. Like, hey, yo, yo. See, that's what I'm talking about. Like, hey, listen, if you didn't watch the anime, watch the anime. I swear to god, like it's almost like as far as comedy anime, it's refreshing to where there's like some comedy anime that is pretty good, but it's almost like my prize of memory just has like stars, they have like style. It's almost like as soon as you thought, okay, it levels out, they throw some dumb shit in there. Kind of like with Danadam, but like more subdued, you know. It's it's like I'm kind of having a hard time explaining it, but I swear to you, the gang in this anime is peak for hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. I'm trying to think go back to the year of the anime 2007. It was peak for 2007, okay? Now, uh not not really much to say, like just these uh I'm gonna say what kind of picture are they? They look like those uh tuna fish, you know, the I wanna say kind of picture tuna fish with the bug eyes, like yeah, like that's like the best way to um put it. Uh yeah, that was pretty much it for the setto family. Like, yeah, I know there's Nakajima, but aside from him just being octopus, he's just there for gags. Like, he doesn't even have lines, crazy enough, because uh the same dude that voices Nakajima also voices Mongo, so I guess it's like okay, at least he has two roles, uh Chris Casey, like at least he has uh two roles in this shit, and one speaking role and one just for gags. And I'm like, hey, well, you know, extra paycheck. All right, uh let's talk about Lunar. All right, Lunar. She kind of how can I put this? Like we said before, she's like driven by competitiveness against Sun. Like she was going so far as to try to steal Nagasumi from Son, even though she doesn't even like him that much. Like, she keeps referring to him as manserving. And oh, I I heard that you really like me as an idol, like you should be ungrateful that your idol gets to sit on your lap. Oh man, like I I kind of understand, like, not exactly lunar, but just imagine if as a dude, if your celebrity crush, um, you get to hang out with them, and they sit on your lap, and I'm sitting like, look, Sebbie, listen, I will, I'm going to fold. Okay. I'm going to fold. And I don't normally do that with women, but like, you have to be like really exceptional. But uh with Lunar, she moves into the house, gradually develops genuine feelings for Nagasuni, and she even tried to marry him in the manga, like you said before. Uh, and son, she was even cool with it. I was like, wow. Well, you know, there's polygam, I don't know. Uh polyam, no, no, not polyamion. Uh what was the other one? Um yeah, I got it right. Um, polygamous or whatnot?
SPEAKER_00:I'm like, okay one one man, two wives is polygamy. Polygamy. There we go.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. And once again, going back to the whole school war thing, she was commanding this personal army of the Eastino Junior High Boys, and they're all uh constantly class with Sons Guards, and she has this weird thing where she's um speaks in third person, or not really like third person, but more like in a plural form, like we instead of she or I or whatnot. And she also got that rich girl laugh. You know that laugh uh with the hand gesture, like the he may laugh.
SPEAKER_00:That's what it's called. Yeah, that's what it was. The he-may laugh. Yeah, I love that. Like, ugh. I love that laugh.
SPEAKER_04:But outside of that, like she kind of gives off tomboy vibes too, especially when um she was given Nakazumi um that one technique, even though that one technique in anime where for some reason it's like uh, I think it was like a policy, not apologized, but um, you know, when they grab you by both legs and then they start stomping you in your junk. And I'm like, bro, like really. Uh outside of that, not much to say on Luna. Like, I I thought uh her being a perfect counterbalance to Sun was a great addition to the dynamics in this anime. Uh, and then we have President Edomai himself, where he's basically this uh parody of the Terminator, like have like this android like this robotic personality. He even got the whole thing where like from his eyeglasses, it looked like some sort of um android cyborg bionic type thing going on. So outside of that, you know, he cares for Lunar, but he just kind of sucked as a dad. Like he's a father, but not much of a dad. Where he's trying to understand Lunar more, like he's trying, but let's just be real, it's more like like what um Lunar said, like he thinks he's the type to throw money at a problem, and now there's not that much proof of that, but if that's what she's saying, then that just goes to show that their relationship is kind of strained to where he's busy, she's busy, they don't have much of a relationship, but they do love each other. It's just you know, not much of one. Uh there's Moon's mother, who got divorced from the father, believed to have abandoned the family. But in reality, like, okay, I'm kind of going to manga territory at this point because they didn't show this in the anime. She served a 10-year prison sentence for intentionally running over her neglectful husband with a car, and she shares Lunar's dramatic personality traits, recognizing her similarity when entering her passionate mood, and her influence shaped Lunar's development with the war songs she's taught and whatnot, with her absence indirectly motivating Lunar's idle career and her criminal past and flamboyant uh temperament created this unconventional but understanding bond with the daughter. So you won't see that in the anime, but I guess you could say there's reasons why Lunar is the way that she is, but like that's the crazy part where like the vehicular manslaughter. Ah wow.
SPEAKER_00:You remember when I told you I had those J. Michael Tatum powers where I could just go, yep, that's J. Michael Tatum.
SPEAKER_05:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, President Edome is freaking J. Michael Tatum. Pointed that out the moment I went, that's J. Michael Tatum. Yep, that's that's that eye those that's that hidden eye that I have. He's also bulletproof in the manga, by the way.
SPEAKER_04:Oh, you know crazy. I'm looking him up now. He was in D Grave Man, okay. Like I wanna review D Great Man, really, I do. And I'm gonna get around to it. Uh, he was in this one anime I like Shuffle, where this is one of those Shuffle is one of those animes where, okay, finally, not only do we have a main character who actually picks a girl, but he got this whole harem, and slowly but surely they're like, okay, you can be part of this love cube that we got going on. So I I just like the direction that it went into. Like, okay, he was also in Bacchina. What hold on, like, that's crazy. Uh Chris Arissa bought and Jay Michael Tatum um was in Boccana.
SPEAKER_00:I could list everything Jake Jay Michael Tatum is in. You don't have to look that up. I can list it off and off.
SPEAKER_04:I mean, I'm kind of doing this for me though, because I know, I know, I know. Yeah. But I'm just kind of geeking out too because he I'm just now realizing that he was in some shit that I watched, but like, unlike I didn't have your attunement to his voice, but uh, I'm going back and I'm like, oh, hold on. He was in some shit that I was um fucking with. Like he scarred from Full Mount Alchemist. Uh, he was in Orin High School Host Club, hell yeah, uh Corpse Princess, uh Ineru from One Piece, uh Chaos Head, Sebastian from um Black Butler, uh Deadman Wonderland. He was also at Fairy Tale. What's up with everybody being in fucking fairy tale? And he was also in Panty and Stalking. Uh he was poor stuff. Okay, cool, cool. Uh Future Diary, Space Dandy, State Alive, Coldbreaker, Erwin Smith as from Tag on Titan Tright.
SPEAKER_00:He also plays Tenya Ida and uh My Hero Academia, Eric Vaughn Ryugin from Tanya, Ray Rick uh Ryugazaki from Furry, um Arthur Pendragon from high school DXD. I could go on.
SPEAKER_04:Dog. There's gonna be like a meme going on to it's kind of like a running gag por the podcast where every time we hear a certain voice actor, and like, oh, there's a boy.
SPEAKER_00:That that's literally that's literally being like, oh, there's my kid. Like, I know that guy.
SPEAKER_05:There's my boy.
SPEAKER_04:But uh, hold on, let's go ahead and get into the other characters going and wrap it up because I got another uh session to do later on. But like I said before, it's really the character that carries the whole thing. Like we have Mari, the uh wannabe cop who has a crush on Nagasumi, and she's like trying to she has these excessive peacekeeping efforts on going around the whole school and whatnot. And I think she's kind of funny, but I think the whole signature line that she has, do you uh want me to teach you the rules of society? I kind of wish she did that a little less. Nothing wrong with her sprinkling in every now and then, but when you when it feels like you say every fucking episode, it's like uh it's like Karen making fetch a thing and mean girls. I'm like, it's not gonna catch on. Get over it. It did catch on, by the way. But this one, nah, I'm like, it got annoying to me. Uh we have Hidi Yoshi Sorry, Toby, aka Chimp. Uh he's the pervert character, and he sometimes not consuming like the uh address him as Chimp Rossi, found Perry and the Dragon Ball, you know, Matt Rossi, because he's like a Kirby hermit, which is funny because the uh Tariah uh Aleg Story was like right there too. But oh well, whatever. Uh we have class rep, which is funny because they were really close to revealing her name, but we didn't get there. Wait, hold on. Wait, nope, never mind. Uh on her name?
SPEAKER_05:Because I have no, I got I know it now.
SPEAKER_04:Is uh Ina Teo. Huh. I'm just reading it now. I'm like, okay. I'm just gonna call her Teo. Uh just working your sake. And essentially, you know, she had on the she was meat, she had the glasses, and she also had feelings for Nagasumi, tried to confess to him through a letter, but she accidentally um confessed to son when she showed up uh out of the blue, and then she had this alternate persona, the last Amazonist, who uh just kind of make it sound like, oh well, this persona likes women, and that way it doesn't seem like oh, that was her that confessed the sun. He's kind of delusional type thing, but what can I say? Like without the glasses and with her hair down, she actually looked cute, like you know she cute, okay, but yeah, yeah, Kai McCower, you have this rich kid who used to be very sheltered, like he had agoraphobia to a point where he don't like open spaces, I guess. And when you know, like going out in the real world, and it's like, oh, this open space is freaking me out. That's why he gotta have like this astronauts in order to feel more comfortable being out and about. And one thing I don't like about Chimp, and I'm gonna mention this when I get to Okina. One thing I don't like about Chimp is how he switches up real fast when someone of power shows up. Like with Kai flashing his money and all that shit, he was like, oh shit, I'm gonna fuck with him now. Oh yeah. A love rival for Son, because you know, back when they were kids, Son would play with um Kai. You know, Son just thought he was just a playmate, but because Kai didn't really have friends that much, and she was the first person that liked him outside of his money, and suddenly he just caught feelings for her ever since then, and that's kind of explains why Kai and Naga Sumi be beefing each other. Um other than that, not much, not much to say about him. Uh Akano. Okay, now we're getting to a point where first of all, I like how with Akano, she she's the um, I I remember now. She's the voice actress for Mikasa from Attack on Titan. It's crazy how a bunch of people from Attack on Titan was also on this shit. But she was the mermaid examiner attached to deporting Murkrow who failed to blend in with humans. And unlike the others, she's able to suppress her transformation, you know, kind of like with Monster, and I guess the rest of them, unless you know, they didn't really get war splashed on them, but they're able to suppress their transformation when wet, um, thanks to her training. And at first, she was hostile towards the protagonist, but it's mainly toward because you know, she was doing her job. But as we get to know her better, like she develops compassion, and she had this whole thing to where she had to serve as a knight for the final antagonist in um last stretch of episodes, but like she was just doing her duty, like she didn't really want to do it, but she had to because it was her job. Uh what else? Oh, yeah, the whole vexingly sexy shot caller things where when she was pretty much beating up the Bronchial Respiration Brothers and everybody, she pretty much gained the respect of at least the male demographic of the middle school. And that's because, first of all, she was badass, and second of all, titties. Uh she's kind of funny, especially like during the non series episode where like um she Monkey well not Maki, excuse me, uh Mawari, and the others, like for some reason it was like they had like I don't think it was like sake or whatnot, but for some reason it was like heated up or like. We're just not acting themselves at the time. It's almost like they were drunk, but I don't think they were really drunk. But uh yeah, Akinob can be kind of funny, but she's more of the series character, kind of like Monster. Uh oh, yeah. Uh the guy that I was alluding to, um, Yoshio. He's this mermaid noble who secretly abducts girls and kind of have his way with these girls, but come to find out that he's like this overweight catfish type um mermaid. And he just repulsive personality. Like, just yeah. Um there's some other characters involved, but they're mainly uh manga only because you don't see the rest of them in the anime. But uh Sebi, you got anything you want to add on to all this?
SPEAKER_00:No, I think you covered everything. I love I love the manga and I've really enjoyed the anime. I recommend watching it if you haven't seen it, and then check out the images, check out the character images of each character. They're so detailed and so perfect. I love them so much. I think I have the one of um the student council president, the the Amazonian, the Amazonians, whatever you want to call her. I have a picture of her because I love her artwork so much. Like I love that one, her transformation.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, that's all right. Uh honestly, with all of that being said, let's go ahead and do a rating. I dare say, as a comedy, my bride as a mermaid is a nine out of ten. But uh, if I gotta be critical, I would knock it down to maybe an eight. Because my main thing is by the anime is not complete, so there may be more in the manga that kind of adds more on to it. But for the most part, I thought, you know, it's great for what it is, very funny, very endearing characters. But uh outside of that, I guess you could say, like I said before, if the characters wasn't really carrying this show, I would say it's kind of run of the mill, so to speak. It's like you have your premise, and then for the most part, they just have shenanigans at school. Maybe they like some serious shit going on, like the mini arts where you have the one art where Lunar tried to force Nagasumi to marry her. We already talked about the repulse of noble. Um some others too. Like I'm thinking, but like you know what? Fuck it. Like I gotta go ahead and move on to other reviews. So I'm gonna go ahead and give it like a eight to a nine out of ten for me. Uh, what about you, seven?
SPEAKER_00:I was gonna say an eight and a half seems pretty valid for me. Enjoy the characters, they carried a lot of the show. Slice of life aspect is really good. Romance is pretty good to me. Um, there are some moments where it was kind of iffy for me, but I have to say an eight and a half.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, there you have it. 8.5 out of 10. Very good. Like, definitely give it a chance. But if not your cup of tea, hey, not everything for everybody. And I respect it. So, with that being said, let's go ahead and close out. Sebi, I do thank you for being on this episode. And to the dear listener, I thank you for listening to us to the end. Go ahead and have yourself a good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. But ultimately, do take it easy, do stay nerdy. Remember that great things are coming, and we hope you stay tuned for another episode of the nerdy news and review.
